Human Evolution
You need to research the evolutionary changes that we believe
have taken place to be were we are today. All of your findings
should be presented in a PowerPoint presentation.
(it is immaterial whether or not you believe what you find out)
Due date Monday June 9th (MAP permitting)
Lucy
Lucy was discovered in 1974 by
anthropologist Professor Donald
Johanson and his student Tom Gray
in a maze of ravines at Hadar in
northern Ethiopia.
• By three million years ago, the world of Lucy
and Australopithecus afarensis had vanished. Hidden
forces were transforming the Earth's climate, with
devastating consequences for the African landscape.
• Homo ergaster evolved during an accelerated period
of global cooling and drying that cleared more and
more tropical rainforest from Africa and created a
desert in the northern half of the continent.
• Our knowledge of human evolution has always been
limited by the meagre quantities of hominid fossils that
have been discovered. But a system of limestone caves
at Atapuerca in northern Spain has yielded an
embarrassment of riches by comparison with an
otherwise patchy hominid record.
• Neanderthals looked much like modern humans only
shorter, more heavily built and much stronger,
particularly in the arms and hands. Their skulls show
that they had no chin and their foreheads sloped
backwards. The brain case was lower but longer
housing a slightly larger brain than that of modern
humans. As almost exclusively carnivorous, both male
and female Neanderthals hunted. Evidence of a huge
number of injuries - like those sometimes seen in
today's rodeo riders - suggests that hunting involved
dangerously close contact with large prey animals.
• Humans are in the same great ape family as the
chimpanzees, gorillas and orangutans - with which they
share a common ancestor. Modern humans spread
from their African homeland some 70,000 years ago
and have come to dominate every continent on Earth
except Antarctica. As a behaviorally, socially and
culturally diverse species, humans have developed art
and complex languages. As a species humans cannot
survive without tools. They are the only known species
to build fires, cook food and clothe themselves.
