Safely preserved in a vault deep
inside our headquarters in San
Francisco lies an archive of over
20,000 rare and unique examples of
LeviāsĀ® clothing and artefacts dating
back to as early as 1873. Kept at an
even temperature and wrapped in
unbleached cotton, these delicate
specimens are carefully protected
by the LeviāsĀ® Historian and strictly
reserved for the use of our designers.
Each season, our team pores through
the archives with white-gloved
hands, uncovering the secrets of
our past and then bringing them
back into the world through faithful
reproductions that are as fresh now
as they were back then.

Detroit in the 1960s was an exciting
city with an explosive music scene.
While a new wave of garage bands
churned out revolutionary rock and
roll, Motown Records was introducing
Young America to Motor Cityās new
groove. And in the innermost part
of the hardworking home of the
American Car industry, youth from the
surrounding neighborhoods gathered
together, soaked up the new sounds
and established their own style.
For Fall Winter 2013, LeviāsĀ® Vintage
Clothingā¢ pays tribute to Mo Townās
musical revolution and the slick
stylings of the people that were there.

1960s 519 BEDFORD CORDS
1960s STRIPED TEE
In the early 1960s, LeviāsĀ®
developed a casual corduroy pant
as an alternative to its other denim
five-pocket offerings. Originally
given the lot number 911 but
later called the 519, it was made
from sturdy Bedford corduroy
and featured a zipper fly, tapered
inseam and an impeccably slim fit.
In the swinging, techni-color 1960s,
LeviāsĀ® began to evolve the plain
white tee by introducing simple
jersey cotton shirts in a rainbow
of colors and striped patterns. The
LeviāsĀ® Vintage Clothingā¢ 1960s
Striped Tee is a slim, neat and tidy
jersey cotton T-shirt with a high
neckline and a chest pocket. It is
offered in different colors and with
different repeat patterns.

Although the LeviāsĀ® 501Ā® is
arguably the most important
garment of the modern age,
Levi Strauss and Company is
also responsible for introducing
or popularizing a series
of other iconic pieces of
clothing throughout the last
two centuries. Every season,
LeviāsĀ® Vintage Clothingā¢
offers a selection of the

1954 501Ā®Z JEANS 1950s TAB TWILL CHINOS
1950s SHORTHORN SHIRT 1950s SPORTSWEAR TEE
In the 1950s, Levi Strauss & Co.
added a zipper to its iconic 501Ā®
Jean to appeal to East Coasters
who were uncomfortable with the
traditional button fly. Aside from
the āZā, the 1954 501Ā®Z Jean
was like all other 501Ā® Jeans of its
time. Built from 12 oz. Cone Mills
red selvage denim and had two
covered rivets on both back pockets,
a leather Two Horse patch and a
double needle stitched Arcuate.
Popular with service station
attendants, repairmen, college
students and beat poets, Tab Twill
Chinos were affordable work pants
originally inspired by US military
uniforms. The LeviāsĀ® Vintage
Clothingā¢ Tab Twill Chinos feature
a Tab Twill label on the waistband,
tunnel belt loops and strong welt
pockets made from genuine boat
sail cloth. Theyāre regular fitting
and have been heavily washed for
added softness.
The Shorthorn shirt derived its name
from the Shorthorn bull depicted
on the label. It retained the bold
colors and inventive check patterns
of western shirts, but was stripped
of flashy rodeo details. The LeviāsĀ®
Vintage Clothingā¢ 1950s Shorthorn
Shirt is offered in both a yellow and
a brown check cotton flannel and
features two flap pockets and a
LeviāsĀ® Western Wear Label.
Americans had more opportunities
for leisure in the ā50s and with that
came a more relaxed and casual
approach to dress. The 1950s
Sportswear Tee is similar to the
iconic tee popularized by Marlon
Brando in the film, The Wild One.
It is made from 100% cotton and
bears the original ā50s-era LeviāsĀ®
Sportswear of California label.

1947 501Ā® JEANS
1955 SAWTOOTH DENIM SHIRT
When World War II ended, Levi
Strauss & Co. offered up a new,
slimmer fitting 501Ā® to usher
in the style of post-war America.
Stripped of unnecessary details like
the cinch and suspender buttonsā
the 1947 501Ā® Jeans were made
of 12 oz. Cone Mills red selvage
denim and had two covered rivets
on both back pockets, a Two Horse
leather patch and a big āEā Red Tab.
This is one of the many versions
LeviāsĀ® made of the Western denim
shirt, and certainly the most classic.
Itās referred to as the Sawtooth shirt
due to its distinctive pocket flap
shape, which resembles the teeth
of a saw blade. It is slim fitting and
has mother of pearl snaps, Western
yoke detailing and the LeviāsĀ®
Western Wear Label.

Keep āem Rigid WASH āem GOOd
DIP IN THE āTUB
Some folks like to wear their rigid 501Ā®s without washing. The wear effect on a
true rigid jean will always give the most dramatic look. You can dry-clean, but thatās
only if you donāt mind chemicals being used on your denims. Some people spray vinegar
when their jeans hang inside out to remove any odour. Some simply hang their jeans
outside for a few days. Folding jeans into the freezer also does the same job.
If you prefer a thorough wash and simply donāt have the time for handwashing,
wash inside out at 86Ā° F / 30Ā° C. Donāt tumble-dry: itāll shrink too much. Dry in the
open air if you can, or hang them in a warm place until crispy dry. Long-term shrinkage
will occur over several washes.
The very first time you wear your 501Ā®s, climb into the bathtub and let them soak
on your body for up to half an hour. Drain the tub, squeeze the excess water from
your legs then get outside in the sunshine to dry them into your shape. Otherwise, bend
and stretch while wearing them indoors until you can carefully slip out of them and dry
them over the back of a chair. When your jeans are dirty, simply climb back into the
bathtub and wash with a little soap.
If you donāt plan to wash your 501Ā®s,
buy one size smaller in the waist and true
size for length. After a few wears the waist
will stretch to your size.
If you plan to wash your 501Ā®s, buy two
sizes bigger in the waist and length and
wash to achieve your size.

The following guidelines are considering law of averages
with our LeviāsĀ®
Vintage Clothingā¢
501Ā®
jeans. Each denim
will shrink and skew in a slightly different way. Different
temperatures will also have an effect. The options for how
you wash, wear and care for your 501Ā®
jeans are vast.
Itās up to you to make your choice and stick to it.
Enjoy this journey and long-term love affair.
GET THE RIGHT FIT
If you plan to shrink your 501Ā®s in the
bathtub, buy your true size in the waist but
two sizes bigger in length. After shrinking in
the bathtub, make sure to stretch the waist
back out while still wet: this method will
help achieve a slimmer silhouette.
