This document presents guidelines for the surgical treatment of patients with acute cholecystitis. It discusses:
1) Early laparoscopic cholecystectomy is preferable to delayed cholecystectomy as it results in shorter hospital stays and quicker recovery.
2) Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is preferable to open cholecystectomy for treating acute cholecystitis based on randomized trials showing shorter hospital stays and lower complication rates.
3) For mild to moderate acute cholecystitis, early laparoscopic cholecystectomy is preferred. For severe cases, urgent drainage and/or cholecystectomy is necessary after improving the patient's general condition.
