The Atkins
Diet: An
Unresolved
Debate.
Nutrition

pp.1-5.
Christman,
Grant. 2002.
The Atkins diet uses the theory that
carbohydrate consumption is
responsible for weight gain. The
article talks how the diet is divided
into 4 phases and how each relates
to the theory of the diet. The article
also addresses harmful side effects
and opposing viewpoints that state
the diet cuts calories and people lose
weight because of it. Ultimately, the
diet cuts carbs, which in turn cuts
calories and forces the body to burn
fat.

The diet is designed to create rapid
weigh loss (up to 15lbs in 2 weeks)
through the dismissal of carbs from
your daily diet. The idea is that the
body has stored fat that is not used
due to the consumption of carbs
(simple sugars) there for there is
weight retention. Without the
introduction of new fuel the body
must burn the stored fat, thus weight
is lost.

The Atkins Diet is a diet that focuses
on eating little to no carbs and lots of
protein. In my case study a women
was having life threatening results
from this diet including symptoms
consistent with ketoacidosis; Due to
the decreased production of insulin
due to starvation. This diet tries to
focus on burning fats but can lead to
serious effects.

14. Consensus Statement of Group on the
Atkins Diet
• Adequacy
• Balance
• Calorie Sound
• Nutrient Density
• Variety
• Expense
• Time
• Based on Scientific support
15. Adequacy
• The Atkins diet is a very unbalanced diet. For
the average person, the diet does not provide
a healthy amount of carbohydrates. It also
does not put a huge emphasis on the
consumption of dairy products so often times
there is a lack of calcium being consumed.
However, you need to keep in mind that the
diet is designed for weight loss.
16. Balance
• The Atkins diet is heavily set on a high protein
mark with low carbs with it. The whole point
of the Atkins diet is weight loss. Essentially, it
is low calorie but high protein. So from an
energy stand point, it is off balance.
17. Calorie Sound
• The diet is low on calories with the theory that
if you eat a low amount of calories, then the
body will burn the fat off of you rather than
use the calories you intake. So this diet is low
on calories and targeted for overweight
individuals that are bent on losing weight.
18. Nutrient Density
• The Atkins diet is a very nutrient dense diet.
With the small amount of calories that you
intake compared to the nutritional value of
the diet, the Atkins diet is very nutrient dense.
The diet does not encourage the eating of
foods like chips, and candy so it definitely
helps with eliminating wasteful foods that
offer no nutritional value.
19. Variety
• Since the diet is low on carbs, the Atkins diet is
probably not the best diet to look at in terms
of variety. However, the Atkins diet offers a
ton of protein options such as beans, meats
and such.
20. Expense
• Protein is not cheap. Compared to that of a
Vegan diet, the Atkins diet can be quite more
expensive. However, the portions are so much
smaller than what a typical person is eating
that it could potentially even out. Personally
though, if you are eating more protein than
anything else in your diet, then your are
bound to be spending more money than
normal.
21. Time
• Most of the food you eat on the Atkins diet
menu is Protein. Most proteins you eat must
be cooked. However, you can buy
prepackaged meals for the Atkins diet. So if
you are looking to cook, you may spend some
time cooking your meal. However, if you are
willing to buy the food they offer, you can save
some time.
22. Based of Scientific Support
• Once again, the Atkins diet is based upon
losing weight and burning the fat off of your
body. The meal selection I chose to be
analyzed revealed that if you ate that way for
a week you could potentially lose 1-2lbs by
the end of the week. For an overweight
person trying to shed pounds the Atkins diet is
effective and potent.
