It is often observed that students in computer
science and information technology lack the ability to practically apply the programming concepts to solve problems. Absence of this vital ability, limits the opportunities for these novices in the computer field. Taking a closer look at the problem, we observe that deficiency lies in the methodology of training that is imparted to them - limited practice opportunities, excessive focus given to syntax and semantics of the target programming language,
untimely feedback due to manual grading, insufficiently addressed pedagogical aspects, etc.
In this presentation, we discuss a teaching methodology to enhance the programming skills of students, using an in-house program grading tool – Parikshak. We have incorporated various
pedagogical elements in teaching/learning programming in this methodology. Based on our results and findings of adopting this methodology in one of our post graduate diploma program, we strongly believe this combination of pedagogy and technology provides a viable solution for significant improvement in the programming abilities of students.

For many years Swinburne has used separate and independent LMS’s in our TAFE and Higher Education sectors. In response to a management directive that all Student and Staff should use a single, unified LMS, Swinburne looked to Blackboard Hosting as a way to deliver this project. In addition to financial benefits, Swinburne’s use of a hosted solution delivers significant non-financial benefits. These benefits include outcomes such as resource flexibility, service level improvements and removing the distraction of managing technical issues allowing staff to remain focused on the main challenge of implementing a single LMS solution.
This presentation will outline Swinburne’s progress to date including the decision making process, key benefits and risk considerations, the experience to date and way forward as Swinburne progresses towards a single hosted LMS.

Machine learning can be used for tasks that are labor intensive, tedious, or cannot be done at scale by humans. Three use cases are described: counting parasites in petri dishes to detect 70-95% accurately, classifying clinical documents to label 90% accurately, and coding doctor's notes to map to ICD-10 codes with 75-95% accuracy using rules-based approaches. Overall, initial results were promising but further work is needed to integrate models into products and ensure consistent performance.
