2. ¿Fruit or vegetable?
Tomato is a fruit very consumed around the world thanks to all the
possibilities that it offers.
Yes, it's a fruit. The confusion comes from far away, when the U.S.
Supreme Court in the year 1887 argued that it was a vegetable because
it was used in salads and meals and not as dessert.
3. Origins of tomato
Tomato is from South America, specifically from Ecuador, Peru and
Chile. At first it was a small and bitter berry that grew wild in the
west coast of South America. Hernán Cortés was the one who
brought tomato to Europe after his conquest of Mexico.
4. Tomato varieties
There are almost 100 varieties of
tomatoes, classified by use, size
and shape, also if they are for
salad or cooking.
Among them stand out these
types:
● Kumato: this type of tomate
has a dark red skin and a
characterictic taste.
● RAF tomato: perfect for
salads.
● Plum tomato: elongated
shape, really tasty and ideal
for cooking.
5. Tomato varieties
● Cherry: its skin is really thin
and its flavour really sweet,
little tomatoes. They are
called cherry because are
similar to the fruit. Healthy
snacks.
● Beef Heart tomato: with the
shape of a heart, big and
with an intense red colour.
Thin skin, fleshy pulp.
● Dan-ronc: normally this
type is used for salads
because of its big size.
6. Agrosol varieties
This season in Agrosol we have
three varieties of tomatoes:
● Piccolo: very aromatic and
flavourful small to medium
size tomato. It has somewhat
sweet and peppery flavour.
● Baby plum: oval-shaped mini
pear tomato. With
satiny-smooth skin and dark
red colour. The perfect snack
for our brand Cherrytos&Go.
● Vine tomato: our most
traditional tomato, it has the
best natural fragance and
freshness.
7. Tomato cultivation
The temperature needed for cultivating tomatoes are between
20-30 degrees Celsius t day and 18 degrees Celsius at night. Higher
temperatures affect the development of the tomato, lower
temperatures affect the growth of the plant.
8. Best time for tomato
Now it’s possible to find tomatoes all the year but the best
time is summer because, as happen with other vegetables like
peppers and aubergines, tomatoes support better
hot than cold.
9. How to keep them
Riped tomatoes have a bright
colour, smooth skin and are soft
to the touch whereas less riped
tomatoes have a pinkish tone.
We have to try to avoid the fridge
because it is bad for the
tomatoes, they lost flavour. We
can freeze them if we prefer in
order to preserve the tomatoes
more time.
10. Benefits of tomato
Composed mainly for water and
carbohydrates, tomatoes have
many benefits for our body:
● Source of antioxidants
● Reduce cholesterol
● Protects our heart
● Source of vitamins and
minerals
● Keeping the intestine healthy
● Reduce hypertension
● Relieve Diabetes
● Keep our skin healthy
● Improve our eyes
