Werner Eriksen is the CTO and Co-Founder of Working Group Two. Working Group Two built a mobile core network from the ground up to support product development and offers this mobile core network as a service to mobile operators. Their story began in 2013 with product development challenges in mobile cores, which led them to apply open source principles to build a mobile core network in the cloud by 2015. They are now working with customers to develop products using their network while still innovating.

The document discusses the history and accomplishments of the TAD Summit experiments with multi-operator neutral hosting mobile networks from 2014-2017. It notes that the 2014 summit in Istanbul was the first iteration, which demonstrated components from Truphone, Canonical, Telestax and Metaswitch. Following summits added additional network applications, demonstrated scalability, and introduced a software-defined radio access network. The 2017 summit aimed to add a production-ready 4G radio access network, enable live IMS exchange with public mobile networks, and allow audience phones to connect as part of the demonstration of full multi-operator neutral hosting.

Cloud Control Access: From Hack to Reality

We’ve seen several IoT based door access control hacks over the years at TADHack. INOVO is making this a commercial reality for its customers in Romania and beyond. It’s a great example of the migration from hack to business, and the power of the democratization in telecoms enabling people to create solutions for their customers that fit their specific local needs. The Cloud Control Access System opens doors with cards, codes, phones, and SMS. The prototype starts with physical door controllers (the first release is Arduino-based), then migrates to intermediate building proxies that hold the customers’ database in case the internet goes down (a reality most businesses face several times a year) and them migrating to a scalable cloud authentication and portal layer.

A Geolocation API for real-time, transparent interaction with mobile networks for gathering of location information under any generation of cellular radio access networks.
Independent of core or radio access network, device hardware or software, operational in low-grade network conditions such as underground or indoor environments.
Mobile location information can be retrieved autonomously or triggered by asynchronous events from messaging services such as SMS or USSD, voice, etc., independently of underlying network infrastructure.
Allows service providers to integrate universal location data to any other IoT application, triggering actions and responses from other networked devices and communication channels such as voice and messaging.

Why has there been so much more innovation in the web- and mobile than other industries? One reason is that the internet and the two major mobile platforms have been great at enabling third party developers to build a wide range of products, as well as offering a great distribution channel towards end-users.
We believe this multi sided marketplace approach is the next step for the telecom industry as well. WGTWO has created a programmable mobile core network, built as a platform, API’ed and delivered as-a-service, along with marketplaces where operators, developers and end-users interact.
This enables 3rd party developers to create great products that people love – helping operators to start using and redistributing these products – and allowing subscribers to find, add, and manage extra products on top of their price plans.Making this a reality is not straightforward.
Let us share our journey, where we started – where we are right now – and the direction we are heading.

We ran a survey in May/June/July 2019 to gather people’s experiences and opinions on using Open Source Telecom Software Projects.
I’m often asked to comment on the different open source projects, typical implementation architectures, and answer the usual worries on availability, performance, and what-ifs. This is an attempt to provide something more authoritative than my opinions based on who I last talked to. My role here is simply as someone who has working in and promoted programmable telecoms (CXTech) for the past 2+ decades, to help us all be more successful.
Most of CXTech (potentially a $1.2T industry) runs on just a few open source telecom software projects, that are run by a few people, supported by a much larger community of supporters. It’s like the global food and beverage industry (a $5T market, only 4 times the size of CXTech) was supplied out of the kitchens of a few tens of homes! A contrived analogy to highlight the immense reach made possible by open source software. But it does highlight the global significance of open source telecom software, and the importance of this survey in helping us share experiences and opinions.

All these new players have brought new skills and new approaches to the creation of telecom services, and belatedly telcos are now adopting new approaches for their Telco Services Plane.

We’ve seen several IoT based door access control hacks over the years at TADHack. INOVO is making this a commercial reality for its customers in Romania and beyond. It’s a great example of the migration from hack to business, and the power of the democratization in telecoms enabling people to create solutions for their customers that fit their specific local needs. The Cloud Control Access System opens doors with cards, codes, phones, and SMS. The prototype starts with physical door controllers (the first release is Arduino-based), then migrates to intermediate building proxies that hold the customers’ database in case the internet goes down (a reality most businesses face several times a year) and them migrating to a scalable cloud authentication and portal layer.

A Geolocation API for real-time, transparent interaction with mobile networks for gathering of location information under any generation of cellular radio access networks.
Independent of core or radio access network, device hardware or software, operational in low-grade network conditions such as underground or indoor environments.
Mobile location information can be retrieved autonomously or triggered by asynchronous events from messaging services such as SMS or USSD, voice, etc., independently of underlying network infrastructure.

Why has there been so much more innovation in the web- and mobile than other industries? One reason is that the internet and the two major mobile platforms have been great at enabling third party developers to build a wide range of products, as well as offering a great distribution channel towards end-users.
We believe this multi sided marketplace approach is the next step for the telecom industry as well. WGTWO has created a programmable mobile core network, built as a platform, API’ed and delivered as-a-service, along with marketplaces where operators, developers and end-users interact.
This enables 3rd party developers to create great products that people love – helping operators to start using and redistributing these products – and allowing subscribers to find, add, and manage extra products on top of their price plans.Making this a reality is not straightforward.
Let us share our journey, where we started – where we are right now – and the direction we are heading.

We ran a survey in May/June/July 2019 to gather people’s experiences and opinions on using Open Source Telecom Software Projects.
I’m often asked to comment on the different open source projects, typical implementation architectures, and answer the usual worries on availability, performance, and what-ifs. This is an attempt to provide something more authoritative than my opinions based on who I last talked to. My role here is simply as someone who has working in and promoted programmable telecoms (CXTech) for the past 2+ decades, to help us all be more successful.
Most of CXTech (potentially a $1.2T industry) runs on just a few open source telecom software projects, that are run by a few people, supported by a much larger community of supporters. It’s like the global food and beverage industry (a $5T market, only 4 times the size of CXTech) was supplied out of the kitchens of a few tens of homes! A contrived analogy to highlight the immense reach made possible by open source software. But it does highlight the global significance of open source telecom software, and the importance of this survey in helping us share experiences and opinions.

The survey gathered responses from 120 participants in 2022 compared to 114 in 2021. It covered general topics such as DDoS attacks, security practices, STIR/SHAKEN implementation, IPv6 deployment, and expectations for major tech companies over the next two years. Key findings included that around half of participants have experienced a DDoS attack in 2022 and application-level attacks were as common as volumetric attacks. Most organizations take both reactive and proactive security approaches but more so reactive. STIR/SHAKEN implementation is ongoing with international carriers needing it to terminate traffic in North America. IPv6 deployment remains steady with no major differences between regions. Apps Break Data
How information systems are built or acquired puts information, which is what they should be about, in a secondary place. Our language adapted accordingly, and we no longer talk about information systems but applications. Applications evolved in a way to break data into diverse fragments, tightly coupled with applications and expensive to integrate. The result is technical debt, which is re-paid by taking even bigger "loans", resulting in an ever-increasing technical debt. Software engineering and procurement practices work in sync with market forces to maintain this trend. This talk demonstrates how natural this situation is. The question is: can something be done to reverse the trend?
Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity server
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).

From Natural Language to Structured Solr Queries using LLMs
This talk draws on experimentation to enable AI applications with Solr. One important use case is to use AI for better accessibility and discoverability of the data: while User eXperience techniques, lexical search improvements, and data harmonization can take organizations to a good level of accessibility, a structural (or “cognitive” gap) remains between the data user needs and the data producer constraints.
That is where AI – and most importantly, Natural Language Processing and Large Language Model techniques – could make a difference. This natural language, conversational engine could facilitate access and usage of the data leveraging the semantics of any data source.
The objective of the presentation is to propose a technical approach and a way forward to achieve this goal.
The key concept is to enable users to express their search queries in natural language, which the LLM then enriches, interprets, and translates into structured queries based on the Solr index’s metadata.
This approach leverages the LLM’s ability to understand the nuances of natural language and the structure of documents within Apache Solr.
The LLM acts as an intermediary agent, offering a transparent experience to users automatically and potentially uncovering relevant documents that conventional search methods might overlook. The presentation will include the results of this experimental work, lessons learned, best practices, and the scope of future work that should improve the approach and make it production-ready.
