Title: Sense of Smell
Presenter: Dr. Faiza, Assistant Professor of Physiology
Qualifications:
MBBS (Best Graduate, AIMC Lahore)
FCPS Physiology
ICMT, CHPE, DHPE (STMU)
MPH (GC University, Faisalabad)
MBA (Virtual University of Pakistan)
Learning Objectives:
Describe the primary categories of smells and the concept of odor blindness.
Explain the structure and location of the olfactory membrane and mucosa, including the types and roles of cells involved in olfaction.
Describe the pathway and mechanisms of olfactory signal transmission from the olfactory receptors to the brain.
Illustrate the biochemical cascade triggered by odorant binding to olfactory receptors, including the role of G-proteins and second messengers in generating an action potential.
Identify different types of olfactory disorders such as anosmia, hyposmia, hyperosmia, and dysosmia, including their potential causes.
Key Topics:
Olfactory Genes:
3% of the human genome accounts for olfactory genes.
400 genes for odorant receptors.
Olfactory Membrane:
Located in the superior part of the nasal cavity.
Medially: Folds downward along the superior septum.
Laterally: Folds over the superior turbinate and upper surface of the middle turbinate.
Total surface area: 5-10 square centimeters.
Olfactory Mucosa:
Olfactory Cells: Bipolar nerve cells derived from the CNS (100 million), with 4-25 olfactory cilia per cell.
Sustentacular Cells: Produce mucus and maintain ionic and molecular environment.
Basal Cells: Replace worn-out olfactory cells with an average lifespan of 1-2 months.
Bowman’s Gland: Secretes mucus.
Stimulation of Olfactory Cells:
Odorant dissolves in mucus and attaches to receptors on olfactory cilia.
Involves a cascade effect through G-proteins and second messengers, leading to depolarization and action potential generation in the olfactory nerve.
Quality of a Good Odorant:
Small (3-20 Carbon atoms), volatile, water-soluble, and lipid-soluble.
Facilitated by odorant-binding proteins in mucus.
Membrane Potential and Action Potential:
Resting membrane potential: -55mV.
Action potential frequency in the olfactory nerve increases with odorant strength.
Adaptation Towards the Sense of Smell:
Rapid adaptation within the first second, with further slow adaptation.
Psychological adaptation greater than receptor adaptation, involving feedback inhibition from the central nervous system.
Primary Sensations of Smell:
Camphoraceous, Musky, Floral, Pepperminty, Ethereal, Pungent, Putrid.
Odor Detection Threshold:
Examples: Hydrogen sulfide (0.0005 ppm), Methyl-mercaptan (0.002 ppm).
Some toxic substances are odorless at lethal concentrations.
Characteristics of Smell:
Odor blindness for single substances due to lack of appropriate receptor protein.
Behavioral and emotional influences of smell.
Transmission of Olfactory Signals:
From olfactory cells to glomeruli in the olfactory bulb, involving lateral inhibition.
Primitive, less old, and new olfactory systems with different path

Even if it takes you 10 weeks, go for it.
While this guides states 28 days, these 28 days are for you to see
a transformation. To actually see results!
Most women never see any results. This guide gives you results…
However, if you need 10 weeks, you’re not going to achieve it in
28 days. If we follow the example mentioned above, you’ll lose 8
pounds in 28 days.
It may not seem like much, but it is definitely going to be a
visible difference. Your face will become slimmer. Your belly and
thighs may shrink a little. You’ll be amazed.
And that’s the whole point of this book… To show you what’s
possible… and from there you keep going. If it takes you ten
weeks, you just keep doing what you’ve been doing these 28
days till you reach the ten weeks.
You must stay the course!
Success is nothing more than a few simple disciplines, practiced
every day.

30. Chapter 4 - Do You Need To
Diet? You don’t need to diet… but you need to
follow a diet.
Does that sound confusing?
Many women make the mistake of starving themselves in the
hope of losing weight fast. This is counterproductive and actually
works against them.
You need to be on a diet that is right for you… and most
importantly, you need to be at a caloric deficit.
As long as you’re at a caloric deficit, you will lose weight.
You’re probably wondering… “What if I ate junk food and still
maintained a caloric deficit?”
In theory, yes. It’s not so simple… but yes. You can lose weight
even while eating fast food, processed food, and junk food…
whatever they may call it. You know what these foods are.

Chapter 6 - Water Not Wine
While there is nothing wrong in drinking the occasional glass of
wine, when you’re trying to lose weight, almost all the fluid you
consume should only be water.
The easiest way to get fat is to drink your calories. Avoid sodas,
commercially sold fruit juices, sports drinks, etc. You only need
water!
And you should drink lots of it.
This is why you should drink water…
∙ Drinking ice cold water in the morning speeds up your
metabolism
∙ It reduces your appetite. Any time you feel like snacking,
drink a glass or two of water and you’ll feel full and be less
likely to snack.
∙ It keeps you hydrated and healthy.

62. You may have heard that exercising on an empty stomach is
great for weight loss. However, the idea of a strenuous workout
so soon after waking doesn’t appeal to most people.
The good news is that it does NOT have to be
strenuous. In fact, it’s best to keep things relatively
light.
One of the best ways of losing weight is to go for a brisk walk
first thing in the morning. A short 20 to 30 minute walk is
ideal.
You should be able to hold a conversation while walking. You
shouldn’t be exerting yourself to a point where you’re panting and
gasping.
We’re not aiming for high intensity here.
When you wake up in the morning, your body is in a fasted state.
Your glycogen levels are low and the food in your body would
have been digested.

Chapter 13 - Taking Time to Smell the
Roses
There will be times when you just feel like giving up. This is
normal.
What you need to do is relax and enjoy the process. Be satisfied
with even a pound of weight loss. You can lose more the following
week.
What matters is that you know that you’ll get there and you must
stay positive.
Don’t obsess over your weight. Maintain the caloric deficit, do
your workouts, drink enough water, get enough sleep, make your
workouts fun… and relax.
You will reach your goal. Watch a movie or a comedy to de
stress. Go on a vacation but don’t throw your diet away.
Always keep your chin up and keep going forward. Visualize
where you want to be… and you’ll get there.
