The Jesuits established the first year-round settlement in Acadia in 1604 and tried to start a mission there between 1611 and 1604, but were unsuccessful. Though not dominant in European affairs, Portugal established an extensive global colonial trading empire through its powerful naval power, beginning with the capture of the rich Islamic trade center of Ceuta in 1415, marking the start of the Portuguese Empire.

Spain was facing major economic problems in 1576, including debt from its 80,000-man army in the Netherlands and reduced income from piracy-impacted American colonies. To maintain control over Portugal required extensive occupation forces as well, further straining Spain's resources as it struggled with bankruptcy in 1576. The death of Dutch resistance leader William the Silent in 1584, who was hoping to end the war, prolonged the conflict.

The discovery of the Americas provided economic benefits to Spain through valuable trade goods and resources, but also had negative unintended consequences. Agricultural products and precious metals from the Americas boosted Spain's economy and funded military operations, but also led to inflation that hurt the poor and domestic producers, as well as overtaxation. Additionally, plague and emigration greatly reduced Spain's population by the mid-17th century.

The kingdom of Spain was founded in 1492 with the union of Castile and Aragon. This same year marked Christopher Columbus' first voyage to the Americas and the beginning of the powerful Spanish Empire. In subsequent centuries Spain became the most significant colonial power in the world due to wealth from territories in the Americas. However, over time Spain declined as a global power due to various wars and succession disputes that weakened it during the 18th and 19th centuries.
Oliver Cromwell
Oliver Cromwell was an English military and political leader who served as lord protector of England from 1653 until his death in 1658, after playing a role in establishing England as a republican commonwealth following the execution of King Charles I in 1649. As lord protector, Cromwell dominated a short-lived English commonwealth, conquered Ireland and Scotland, and remained a controversial historical figure in the British Isles.
