1) Celebrating New Year was permitted in communist Romania as it does not have religious connotations. On New Year's Eve, villagers would go from house to house to wish people a prosperous new year.
2) In the week between Christmas and New Year, groups of lads in villages would prepare costumes and masks representing myths and animals for various customs and traditions.
3) One tradition is "Plugușorul" where groups visit households while singing songs about prosperity and abundance for the new year.
