The black legend was influenced by national and religious rivalries and seen early on by Protestant historians and Anglo-Saxon writers as unfolding the period of Spanish imperialism in a disapproving way. The black legend was also used inside Spain by regionalists of non-Castilian regions as a supporting weapon in opposition to the central government or Spanish nationalist.
