• During the 15th & 16th century Portugal was a major European power.
• Portugal was at the same height with England, France and Spain in the
conditions of economic, political, and cultural influences.
• Portugal was not dominant in European affairs but Portugal did have
an extensive colonial trading empire throughout the world by a
powerful thalassocracy.
• 1415 the beginning of the Portuguese Empire started with the
departure of the Portuguese armada to the rich trade Islamic center of
Ceuta in North Africa.
