The Education Centre Francisco Coll in Guatemala City provides education and training to 310 poor boys and girls from families that live in makeshift homes near the city landfill and earn a living by recycling waste. It was founded in 1994 to serve the communities around the landfill and help the children gain skills to determine their own destiny.

Ecotourism is helping to save the Maya Biosphere Reserve, the largest remaining tropical forest in Central America. Conservation International opened an eco-language school in 1993 that teaches Spanish to foreign visitors. This has become an economic boon for the 5,000 villagers, with many moving into tourism-related jobs and some giving up farming altogether. The school and new businesses are helping to reduce reliance on destructive logging and farming practices that were threatening to eliminate the forest by 2025, and together may help stop further destruction of this natural treasure.

She travels to Africa twice a year for about a month at a time to teach skills to help the women earn income. The programs have helped the women earn more money to support their families and gain a sense of self-worth in their communities. Lighting the Path also partners with other organizations to provide resources for education, health, and basic needs for the villagers.

- 1. The Education Centre Francisco Coll in Guatemala City, Relleno Sanitario, Zone 3, is run by the Dominican Sisters of Anunciata.They are lokking after poor girls and boys, who are living in the various settlements around the landfill.
- 2. The Centre was founded in 1994. It grants training and integral education for girls and boys, whose families earn their living by waste recycling. In this year the Centre has admitted 310 pupils.
- 3. Separation of the waste in the city’s main landfill is the main income resource for the families. They are earning averagely 4 US$ per day.
- 5. Every hut is constructed of recycled materials. They use metal plates, timber, card- board and other materials. Each hut measures ca 9 square meters and is called “champitas”.
- 6. Because of their poorness the families survive each day only by satisfying their basic necessities.
- 7. Thanks to the generosity and solidarity of people the girls and boys can have hope for a better living by education.
- 8. Here they get education and training, which hopefully enables them to be masters of their own destiny for a good future. Here we teach them also the message of Jesus Christ.
- 9. Besides training and integral education the girls and boys also get a school meal each day. This is an important factor, becaus 90% of the children don’t get breakfast at home and this then is their first meal of the day.
- 10. Thank you for being part of our working-equipe. Thank you for your solidarity with our girls and boys. The Lord of the Life may enlighten you and may shelter you in your activities of helping the poor and HE may make your dreams come true.
