targeted, stimulated and strengthened.
Who is an
Appropriate Candidate?
• Presenting with a diagnosed learning disability
OR
Struggling to learn academic/social skills
• Average to above average intelligence
• Having any combination of 19 learning dysfunctions
• Mild to Severe learning problems
Principles of the
Arrowsmith Program
• Design a task that stimulates a
specific cognitive area
• Start the level of task difficulty
just above the level of current
functioning of the area
• Remove the support of areas
that could compensate for
weaker functioning
• Build in performance mastery
criteria that is rewarded
• Eliminate stress to build brain.
Improvements
• Able to write more legibly, neatly,
easily
• Eye tracking improves, no
longer losing place in reading
• Able to complete written tests
within time limits
• Able to copy material quickly
and accurately
• No more careless errors in
mathematics
• Speech is more fluent
• Reading speed improves
• Spelling can become automated

**2 experienced /Registered teachers. **
Trained in Toronto ---5weeks.
**5 sessions + Homework session
8.55am—3.30pm
**10 students per programme-(9years-Adults)
Not a tutoring programme but will have some
small snippets-- Literacy / Maths/Fitness/Arts

Intention of Slide Outline who will benefit from the program Describe the wide range of learner who could benefit Talking Points Any student struggling with a learning problem could benefit Providing they are in average range for intelligence Students who are not in the average range for intelligence have difficulty accessing the program because they have decreased foundational neural connections within the grey matter, and therefore have limitations to the neuroplastic capabilities of their brains We have worked with student with low IQ’s in the past and have found a definite limit to their progress in the program Any student struggling with academic or social problems – a diagnosis is not required

Intention of Slide AP principles match neuroplastic principles, so AP = brain change cognitive benefits and also psychological benefits   Talking Points each exercise targets a specific brain area – so the student does not having to read and write and understand and remember all at the same time – just one precise, streamlined activity the programmed level matches the students’ ability level – so while they must be challenged, with effort, each goal is an achievable one no supports are used, or valuable – any compensations would jeopardize progress – the students work independently, and without accommodations or modifications – so they feel empowered and accountable mastery criteria is built into every exercise and at every level– feedback and reflection which are constant, and rewarding
