ā¢ Foreign bodies are accidentally be inhaled or
ingested & can be impacted in the air or food
passage.
ā¢ Air passage includes Nose Trachea Carina
Bronchus.
ā¢ Food passage includes hypo pharynx
esophagus.
3. Foreign Bodies in Aero Digestive Track
ā¢ When impacted in Trachea Carina Bronchus it poses
a life threatening emergency.
ā¢ Severity of the symptoms depends on site size
duration & type of (vegetable like seeds or metallic)
the object.
ā¢ Impaction of the big objects in upper digestive tract
can still cause respiratory distress by compressing
airway from behind.
ā¢ Skilled anesthesia &Surgical team is essential for the
successful management of the patient.

f.b. if only A-P view is seen. Lateral view confirms itās not the
f.b but the runner of the zip

A-P view shows some radio opaque object. Lateral
view confirms the position in the larynx .Shape &
available breathing space .Helps to plan the airway
control (tracheostomy if needed).

Lateral shows the site of impaction whether airway
or esophagus.

Lateral view shows the object in retropharyngeal
space but does not show the flanges'-P shows the
flanges of the toy key. Flanges can dislodge the
endo tracheal tube during removal .Surgeon & the
anesthetist should be cautious
