It’s not often anything is founded by a royal decree, so when it
does happen, it’s big news. Originally named the College of
Petroleum and Minerals, King Fahd University in Dhahran has become
among the highest rated seats of higher education for
the fields of science and engineering.

4. Sept. 23, 1963
Georgette Ciselet becomes the first woman
to sit on the Belgian Council of State.
WMEB-TV proudly begins its
broadcast history in Orono, ME.
A daughter is born to Soviet cosmonaut
Gherman Titov, the first child born to a
human who had been in outer space.

5. September 1963
Sept. 1 – An unidentified man walks into Lenin’s tomb
with a bomb strapped to his body and detonates it,
killing himself and causing an untold amount of
damage. The Soviet press will suppress the news
until the fall of the Soviet Union itself.
Sept. 2 – ‘The CBS Evening News with
Walter Cronkite’ expands from 15
minutes to a half-hour.
Sept 3 – The Federal
minimum wage goes to
$1.25/hr.

6. September 1963
Sept. 5 – Call girl Christine Keeler is arrested and
charged with perjury in what would be called the
‘Profumo Affair’, in which Keeler was found having
relations with the married British Secretary of State for
War John Profumo and a Soviet naval attaché at the
same time.
Sept. 7 – The Pro Football
Hall of Fame opens in
Canton, OH
Sept. 9 – NBC follows on the heels of CBS and
expands their news show with Chet Huntley and
David Brinkley to 30 minutes.

7. September 1963
Sept. 13 - Texas widow Mary Kay Ash starts her own line of
cosmetics for $5,000. By her death in 2001, the company
will have sales of $1.4 Billion.
Sept. 13 – Singer/actress Barbra Streisand marries
actor Elliot Gould. They will divorce in 1971, but not
before having one son, actor Jason Gould.
Sept. 10 – For the first time in MLB history, three
brothers played for the same team as Felipe,
Jesús and Matty Alou joined the San Francisco
Giants against the New York Mets. The Mets
won 4-2.
Sept. 13 – The White House announces Pres. Kennedy
will visit Dallas, TX, but the itinerary is not complete.

8. September 1963
Sept. 15 – A bomb planted in the 16th St. Baptist Church in Birmingham,
AL explodes at 10:22 a.m., where 80 black children were attending
Sunday school. Four girls, ranging in age from 11 to 14, were killed and
over 20 others were injured. The official investigation will close with no
arrests in1968, but will be re-opened in 1971. By 2002, three men will
be convicted and sentenced to life in prison.

9. September 1963
Sept. 16 – Hurricane Cindy forms in the Gulf of Mexico. It will
make its way to the Texas coast, killing three and costing over
$12 Million in damages.
Sept. 16 – ‘The Outer Limits’ premiers on ABC.
Sept. 17 – David Jannsen debuts as Dr. Richard
Kimble, wrongly convicted of murder and trying to
clear his name, in ‘The Fugitive’.
Sept. 16 – The British colonies of Singapore, North Borneo and
Sarawak join the Federation of Malaya to created Malaysia.
Sept. 18 – ‘The Patty Duke Show’ premiers, with Patty
playing the role of identical cousins Patty and Cathy Lane.

10. September 1963
Sept. 18 – The grandfather of the Space
Shuttle, the ASSET winged space vehicle
is launched in the first experiment with reusable
spacecraft.
Sept. 18 – The last baseball game played at the
famed Polo Grounds in New York City sees the
New York Mets lose to Philadelphia 5-1. Afterwards,
fans swarmed The field, grabbing all sorts of
memorabilia from the park.
Sept. 21 – According to author Stephen King, the namesake of
his breakthrough novel is born on this date in Chamberlain, ME.

11. September 1963
Sept. 21 – Mario Andretti makes his debut in a
major auto race in Allentown, PA. On the same
day, future MLB Hall of Famer Joe Morgan debuts
at second base for the Houston Colt 45’s.
Sept. 24 – The U.S. Senate ratifies the first Nuclear
Test Ban treaty by an overwhelming majority.
President Kennedy considers this the highlight of
his administration.
Sept. 24 – Deputy Foreign minister Yaakov Herzog
secretly makes contact with King Hussein II in
London, which would eventually lead to peace
between Israel and Jordan.

12. September 1963
Sept. 24 – 18 workers die in the explosion of a fireworks
factory in Caserta, Italy.
Sept. 25 – Lord Denning’s report on the Profumo Affair
concludes neither Prime Minister Harold MacMillan nor anyone
in his staff knew about the romantic trysts of Christine Keeler.
Sept. 26 – ‘Collected Poems’ is published on the poet’s
75th birthday.
Sept. 26 – A North Carolina man rams his
truck into the gates of the White House to
warn the President that Communists were
taking over his state. They weren’t…and the
President wasn’t at home.

13. September 1963
Sept. 27 – The Houston Colt 45’s became the only
team in major league baseball to comprise of all
rookies, including Joe Morgan, Rusty Staub,
Jimmy Wynn and Aaron Pointer (brother to the
singing Pointer Sisters). Three years later, the team
will move to the Astrodome and become the
Houston Astros.
Sept. 28 – Four years before rocketing to music
stardom as lead singer of the Doors, Jim Morrison
is arrested for stealing items from a Tallahassee, FL
police cruiser.
Sept. 29 – Following the death of Pope John XXIII
and the election of Pope Paul VI, the Second
Vatican Council (‘Vatican II’) reopens in Rome.

position of Pope, or Bishop of Rome, as it
was called then. Besides the first Bishop
(Pope) St. Peter, there was St. Linus and
St. Clement. While there is considerable

bestowed his clergy in Rome to Linus,
making him the second official Pope. What
is known about him is he came from the
Tuscan village of Volterra, his family name
was Herculanus and his mother’s name was

the time of St. Peter’s martyrdom to his
own
death on Sept 23, 67 A.D.
