  • #8 This article discusses the NSLP (national school lunch program) and how various schools nationwide have adopted practices that stigmatize students. There are two focuses in this article. One is the physical separation of paying and non-paying students in the cafeteria, and the practice of shaming students who can’t pay for meals.  This article also discuses title VI of the civil rights act of 1964 which prohibits the discrimination on the basis of race, color, and national origin in programs that recieve financial assistance, such as the NSLP.

The law requires schools to enroll eligible students into the free and reduced-price meals program if their guardians have not, and provide all students with a healthy meal. It expressly prohibits publicly embarrassing students whose families cannot pay.
  • #12 The Virginia House and Senate unanimously passed an anti-lunch shaming bill in 2018, putting an end to practices that could stigmatize children in cafeterias across the state.
