Jonathan Safran Foer's 2002 novel Everything Is Illuminated focused on the author's search for information about his grandfather who escaped the Nazis in Ukraine. Foer's mother, Esther Safran Foer, will publish a memoir recounting her and her husband's survival of the Holocaust while the rest of their families perished. Mirroring her son's novel, Esther traveled to Ukraine with only an old photo and map to learn about her father's other wife and daughter who died in the Holocaust, after her father risked the lives of those who sheltered him.
