The first part describes the factors at play in the future of work in architecture. The second part outlines trends in the design process for architectural offices. The aim of this collaborative 3D printing workshop is to define the production specifications, the teaching-learning pedagogical strategy aspects to help architecture students acquire: the basic competences of building representation, the pre and post processing of printing procedures (printing materials, paint, epoxy, accessories, etc...), defining the missing functions in BIM and Architectural Modelling software and determining the benefits of enhancing them for better 3D prototyping productivity. Two teams (A and B) adopted
specific working scenarios based on real world printing jobs. Team A worked on an in-house scenario and Team B on an outsourcing scenario. Tasks successfully completed showed: the wide range of prototypes that could be produced in an architectural studio and the need for a collaborative network to organize the knowledge and good practices developed by research teams (professional or academic) involved in developing rapid prototyping for architecture. This knowledge network could be a discussion forum and a development partnership of 3D printing manufacturers and CAD/BIM software developers.

is achieved using an additive process where successive layers of material are laid down in

1. FOCUS K3D promotes the
adoption of best practices for the use of
semantics in 3D content modelling and processing.
Its main goals are:
To build multi-disciplinary communities of researchers,
professional users or producers of 3D content;

To carry out rigorous analyses in order to identify issues
that currently inhibit a wider user participation in the pro-
duction, reuse and sharing of 3D content;
To promote and evaluate the results achieved by recent and ongoing projects in the field
of 3D media semantics representation and processing;
To identify promising future developments for a broader use of semantics and knowledge tech-
nologies related to 3D shapes.
Who is FOCUS K3D for
FOCUS K3D addresses the needs of the different categories of both 3D content providers and users
encouraging active participation by key market actors:
Professional developers of tools for 3D content creation and management (CAD systems,
acquisition and reconstruction systems, reverse engineering, computer graphics programs, ...)
Creators of digital 3D content (stylists, engineers, game designers, radiologists, archaeologists,
bioinformaticians, ...)
Publishers/dealers of 3D repositories on line, organisations collecting and distributing 3D
models
Scientists in Computer Graphics and Vision or in disciplines intensively using 3D modelling and
simulation (mechanical engineering, environmental modelling, drug design, ...)
Application Working Groups
The project focuses on four application scenarios that are characterized by a massive use of 3D digital
resources not only related to visual aspects but involving also the representation of domain know-
ledge. For each of these application scenarios, specific dissemination and take-up actions are planned
to demonstrate how semantic 3D content can answer a number of open problems in the content pro-
duction and processing chain in those domains.
