Project proposal title and date:
Working Title: C.A.L.L.I
Date: January – June 2019
Main area of activity:
I will be working in the video medium producing my project as either a short film or a TV mini
series.
Rationale:
My main reason for me wanting to make this project is because I read things in the news about
advances in artificial intelligence technology that genuinely scares me. This subject can often
seem laughable and that it is ridiculous to think that the technology will get to the point like it is in
the movies were it endangers humanity. However these films aren’t made just to entertain us.
They are made to warn us about a very real threat! The more I research it the more it scares me.
Whilst I think in some areas it is a good thing I think we really do have to be careful as a species
so that it doesn’t get out of hand.
In terms of my previous projects In terms of similarity I think my year one FMP matches up closely
with this project. The reason I say this is because that is the last time that I produced a short film
and as a result will include similar techniques, styles and ways of working to this project. I will be
looking at camera techniques that I have already learned such as pan/zoom shots, slider shots
and pull focus shots. In my last project I also learned some more advanced editing techniques in
Premier such as warp stabilisation and how to blur faces and track pixels. Hopefully I will be able
to apply these techniques to my project if necessary. I also successfully experimented with a
native cinematic 2:39:1 aspect ratio, something I considered in my year one FMP but decided it
was too complicated. I could have done my entire project in this aspect ratio however it didn’t fit
with the purpose style and tone of my video. It also didn’t work with the warp stabilisation effect
that I needed to apply to stabilise some shots. However I think it will work with this project, as it is a
cinematic film/TV miniseries that I am trying to produce it will work really well if I am able to do it. I
will also be trying some new techniques such as filming using a camera gimbal; I want to do this so
that I can have smooth shots throughout my film that will add certain sleekness to it as well as
making sure that I don’t have to use a warp stabilizer.
Project Concept:
My project is going to be a short film or TV miniseries about the dangers of Artificial Intelligence.
The way it is going to convey this message is through telling a fictional story with a strong morale
in it. This allows me to be really creative with the project as it will all be my own concepts that will
allow me to still create a strong meaning.
The name of my project is C.A.L.L.I. This is an acronym for Computerised Algorithm for Life
Logistics Interface. This is the name of the main antagonist of my film that the plot revolves
around. The film is set in the near future in a world were technology has become part of our
biology in the form of cortical implants made mandatory by government law. This is enforced by
the Implant Detection Agency. Because of this large technological integration privacy is dead and
has become an outdated concept.
The film follows a troubled teenager Fin Tellart as he goes about his daily life struggling to cope
with keeping up to date and organised with his college work due to his severe case of ADHD,
which he is taking medication for. He also must deal with constant abuse by bully Dan Williamson

(Name Subject to Change) made worse by the fact that they have implants which can’t be
switched of meaning humans are constantly connected to each other. The name Fin Tellart uses
letters taken from the word “artificial Intelligence”.
He eventually discovers C.A.L.L.I, which Is a sentient piece of software that can be downloaded
into his implant which is designed to help people improve and organise their lives. A few weeks
later Fins life has significantly improved, and things seem to be going well. Things quickly go
downhill however as Calli cannot differentiate between true emotions and sarcasm. This eventually
leads to her force Fin to kill Dan through manipulating his mind after he says in anger that he
wishes that Dan was dead. These forces Fin to go through with this act however during the fight
with Dan his implant gets knocked out.
This causes Fin to see the world without his implant for the first time he is deeply moved by this
strange experience. Unfortunately, due to his faulty implant this causes the Implant Detection
Agency to visit him. They believe that Fins actions such as killing the Dan are a result of a
malfunctioning implant. Fin tries to explain about C.A.L.L.I but they don’t believe him as they
believe this is another symptom of a malfunctioning implant. Since the implant is given at birth
when the brain and skull are still growing, it is unremovable and unfixable without killing Fin. This
causes him to be Terminated by the IDA but not before C.A.L.L.I beams herself into the IDA
agents implant in order to preserve her own life. As the IDA are leaving the agent see’s C.A.L.L.I
looking at him from a distance.
How will the project be evaluated and reviewed?
I plan on evaluating my work by doing weekly reflections and taking screenshots of my work as I
go along. I will then be using them in my final evaluation document to annotate and demonstrate
my progress in this project. This will allow me to show the examiner how I have worked, why I
have made certain decisions and what I think I could do to improve. As high quality as this project
needs to be a still anticipate technical faults, this is something that I must acknowledge in my
evaluation as it will show that I am aware of any faults and what I could do to improve. This
constant evaluation will allow me to use this work as almost like a template for future projects
providing it is successful. By this I mean that when I am doing a future project in university, I can
look back at this one and its successes and downfalls and then work to the same level and use the
feedback from my evaluation to improve and achieve a higher grade. This is something I have
done all throughout my college course which allows a constant stream of progression. I have found
that this is specifically for me the best way of progressive working and learning for me.
