This week the student filmed important scenes for their film project including murders and chase scenes. They encountered obstacles with lighting, using fake blood, and had to cut one scene. Overall filming went well, with most scenes shot according to schedule. Next week they plan to complete the opening scene and focus on editing to clarify the film is a public service announcement rather than a slasher film.
1. FMP 2 Diary Week 10
I filmed the most important scenes of my project this week: the ethnic minority man getting his throat slit, the jock
getting stabbed in the throat, the scene where two people split up to investigate a noise and both get murdered,
the final girl stabbing Blanc Face in the side of the head and finally, we started the opening scene where a girl was
chased by Blanc Face through the house. My filming went well this week with many scenes shot according to my
original schedule however, there were several mistakes and one scene had to be cut out of the film. It was a very
productive week overall. I faced three obstacles this week: getting the lighting correct for each scene, using fake
blood in the right way, and having to cut the nerd scene from my project. We were unable to film at night and we
put a filter over the shots which made everything look too light. I partially overcame this problem by filming scenes
when it was darker at night and turning off lights. I also had a problem in using fake blood to make the murders look
realistic without sophisticated practical effects and blood also went everywhere creating a mess. I dealt with this
problem by using props like a fake slit throat, fake scissors in the head and a fake blood sprayer as well as filming
from different angles. I also filmed in rooms with tile surfaces to make it easier to clean. Finally, I had to cut the
murder of the nerd as it did not seem to add much to the film and the least effective scene in terms of the content
and it took up a lot of space on iMovie. I solved this problem by editing the scene out of the project and by adding
more detail to other scenes. I was able to film my project effectively this week by filming at night, using special
props like a fake slit throat, fake axe and knife in the head, using lighting filters and editing fade to black and fade
transitions into the film when editing. Next week, I plan to move the project forward by completing the opening
scene but mainly by editing to make clear that the project is a public service announcement. I plan to edit in more
Commission of Information content and use sound effects and voice overs that make the film seem like a public
service announcement and not primarily a slasher film. One of the strong points this week was being able to
effectively get all scenes filmed this week, a good mix of film shots, good use of sound effects and music, and being
able to keep on schedule with my filming. The weak points this week were trying to make a realistic horror film with
a limited budget, using props sourced myself and filming with an iPad without professional lighting or make-up
artists. The scenes fit well as it is a spoof of a horror film and a public service announcement. My plans are to finish
the opening scene of the girl being killed and to start final editing and post production next week. This week’s
experiences influenced and changed by ideas by making me cut the nerd scene to be mindful of the length of the
film and to keep a consistent context and quality and also to focus on the public service announcement/COI aspect
of the project and as a spoof rather than primarily a horror film which is consistent with my original FMP plan.
