The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence, Italy has several notable architectural features. The massive dome, completed in 1436, was engineered by Filippo Brunelleschi using four million bricks. The Duomo's freestanding bell tower, known as the Campanile, reaches 277.9 feet in height and was begun by Giotto in 1334. The Baptistery of St. John, built in the 11th century on the site of a pagan temple, features an octagonal lantern designed by Brunelleschi.
