The flipped classroom concept originated in US high schools a few years ago and involves students learning course theory at home through pre-recorded lectures, then using class time for collaborative discussion and real-world application of concepts. IntelliTuts is an online platform that allows faculty to record and share lectures virtually for flipped classes, which is useful in India given bandwidth issues in smaller cities. The platform also works on mobile devices, expanding access to quality teaching. Flipped classrooms could be applied immediately in India across many fields by making top faculty available online to more students.

Blended Learning
Blended learning is a newer concept in schools throughout the nation, where the
traditional classroom, pen and paper learning, meets the latest and greatest technological
advances in online learning. To say students in classrooms today are getting the best of both
worlds would definitely be an understatement, as the old ways of lecture-learning are becoming
more and more extinct, while small group, engaged instruction, and online learning are
becoming more relevant and more successful than ever thought possible.
As explained in The Fundamentals of Blended Learning video (2012), “Blended learning
is about leveraging digital content to provide students with skills and practice. Meanwhile, the
teacher focuses on depth and application of concepts to teach higher order of thinking skills”
(Education Elements, 1:29). In order to accomplish all the goals that blended learning seeks out,
there are four different parts within the instruction that make it possible. The first is a lab
rotation, in which students go to the familiar computer lab and learn content from internet
programs in the particular area of study that they are working on, to gain a more interesting and
fun way of learning. The second is in a class rotation where the students are split into several
different small groups and rotate to different centers/stations, such as small group with the
teacher as the instructor, small group with computers as the instructor, and guided practice
(Education Elements, 2012). The third part of blended learning is the flex model in which the
students work in what may look like cubicles in an office, doing individual instruction, while the
teacher may pull one student out at a time to work on direct, one on one instruction at any given
time. The fourth and final type of blended learning is the Pod concept, where there are numerous
grade levels within any given classroom and the teacher is often looked at in a new light, wearing

different hats such as advisor or behavior specialist to sustain each pod (Education Elements,
2012). These four important areas make up what is known as blended learning.
The theories that inform blended learning the most include Piaget’s Theory of Cognitive
Development and Bruner’s Theory of Discovery Learning. Piaget’s Theory informs blended
learning in that it points out how vital and important active experiences are, rather than just
listening to lecture and writing with pen and paper. Piaget points out that in order to gain a full
perspective and understanding of the world around them, children should gain experience
through doing and experiencing, and social interaction should take place as well, in order to gain

Every year there's a new educational approach/trend/fad that everyone gets excited about. In recent years, "hot" topics have included multiple intelligences, differentiated instruction, RTI, and Common Core State Standards, to name just a few. One of the current hot topics is the "flipped" classroom. Many people, looking for a more effective approach to teaching and learning, are taking up this approach. Magazine articles (mostly laudatory) about the approach are popping up like mushrooms after a spring shower. Sixty Minutes even did a segment on it!

SMART UBIQUITOUS LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS
The concept of ubiquitous computing is notoriously documented and successfully applied as society at large
has blissfully accepted and heavily relies upon the pervasive and omnipresence of the online network to
wirelessly connect and seamlessly access the massive knowledge-base and social media. On the other hand,
smart environments are a complex research area that require meticulous attention and in-depth
investigation before being employed as they interact directly with the users. When both these areas come
together within an educational environment, the necessity and exigency of ensuring safe and sound
conditions escalate even more. In this paper, we present ubiquitous learning as one of a number of elearning
affordances within a new learning model as it factors in to addresses one particular aspect of a
smart classroom. The justifications, challenges, and recommendations of embodying our philosophical
concept within a working model are also put forward in what could potentially be the next generation
model of physical classrooms.
Enacting Instruction Online
The Open Learning Initiative (OLI) was created to address limitations of traditional lecture-based education by using technology to enact online instruction differently. OLI courses present expository content and interactive practice problems with immediate feedback, collecting analytics to provide feedback to students, instructors, course designers, and researchers. Evaluation studies have found OLI courses are as or more effective than traditional courses in promoting learning, and students report enjoying the interactive format more than passive lectures.

- 1. ‘Flipped’ Classroom ‘Flipped’ classroom is an idea, clearly, whose time has come. As has been mentioned in the article published in ET on 3rd September 2013 (refered in this blog post). It is a concept which originated in high schools in the US a couple of years ago and has gained popularity since. Learned faculty from Columbia Business School, NYU’s Stern School of Business and Tuck School of Management have been trying this concept with fair amount of success. Flipped classes, the name is slightly mis-leading, since one starts imagining how the classes will get flipped, but these are nothing but a slight twist to the existing mode of teaching. Here the students come to class after going through the theory (beforehand) and the class is meant for more meaningful discussions and application of the concepts in real life scenario in a collaborative manner. This, obviously, is very much a demand of time in this dain age of Google, where information is just a click away. IntelliTuts is an enabling platform for ‘Flipped’ classes. Here, the faculty can record lectures in virtual mode and the same can be made available to students to go through. Already working with a few education institutions, this platform is apt for Indian scenario since we keep facing choked bandwidth in tier II and tier III cities. The platform is also android mobile enabled giving a huge flip to the reach of the lectures. A good faculty is a rare commodity and it is, thus, suggested to bring such natural teachers online and make them reach masses.
