What is FIRE ?
Fire is a rapid chemical reaction of three things like fuel,
heat and oxygen, which produces smoke, light, heat & diff
erent type of gases.
We can understand Fire by FIRE TRIANGLE
Deepak Kumar
Deepak Kumar
Classification of Fire
Class A: Fire involving solid materials such as wood,
cloth, paper, rubber, and plastics etc.
Class B: Fire involving flammable liquids such as petrol, die
sel, gasoline, oil, oil-based paint, and flammable paint etc.
Class C: Fire involving gases like LPG, CNG, methane and
other flammable gases.
 Class D: Fires involving metals such as zirconium, titani
um, potassium and magnesium etc.
Class E: Fires involving live electrical apparatus including
wiring, fuse boxes, circuit breakers, machinery, and a
ppliances.
Deepak Kumar
 Methods for Fire Fighting
Three methods for fire fighting
1. Smothering method :- In this method we reduce/remove the
oxygen from the fire
2. Starvation method:- In this method we remove fuel from the fire
3. Cooling method:- In this method we reduce/remove heat
from the fire

Use It
Once the extinguisher is ready, you are ready to release the extinguishing agen
t. This must be done properly. For example, if you squeeze the handle before y
ou have aimed the nozzle properly, valuable time and extinguishing agent will b
e wasted.
How to use Fire Extinguisher
A technique to remember for using an extinguish
er is published by the National Fire Protection A
ssociation (NFPA). It is known as the P.A.S.S. T
echnique.
Deepak Kumar
The P.A.S.S. Technique:
P :- Pull out the pin that secures the handle.
A:- Aim extinguisher nozzle at the base of the fire.
S:- Squeeze the handle. (Do not be startled by the
noise of the agent as it is released.)
S:- Sweep the agent stream from side to side across
the base of the fire until it is completely out.
Note:- Be alert for re-ignition. If this happens, do
use the fire until the extinguisher is empty.
Once the fire is out, carefully back away from the scen
e. This will enable you to know immediately if the fire r
e-ignites.
What is RACE ?
In case of Fire emergency or fire fighting we follow RACE
The basis of fire plan is a four-step procedure:-
R- RESCUE
A- ALARM / ALERT
C- CONTAIN / CONFINEDTHE FIRE
E- EXTINGUISH / EVACUATE
Deepak Kumar
 RESCUE: Patients or person if in immediate danger of fire or smoke to a p
lace of safety.
 ALARM / ALERT: Go to the nearest manual call point and activate the al
arm by breaking the glass of MCP or Activate Code RED by dialing
1111,Call Fire Control Room 6143 give them your name, l
ocation of the fire and type/size of fire.
 CONTAIN / CONFINED THE FIRE: Close all doors in the area as you le
ave the room. This will contain the fire and smoke in the fire area and give y
ou time to evacuates of patients from your wing to safe Area.
 EXTINGUISH / EVACUATE: if the fire is small, attempt to extinguish the f
ire with a fire extinguisher. If necessary, begin evacuation of the area.

Making The “Right” Decision
To use a Portable Fire Extinguisher
You know, how to use fire extinguishers.
 You know, what is burning.
 Fire is not spreading rapidly.
 Smoke and heat has not filled the area.
 You have a clear path of escape.
 You have right fire extinguisher according to fire
