Below is my interpretation of three sentences of relation to Marx’s argument that struck me as important to my understanding of technology. “Technology as such, makes nothing happen.” This statement means, to my understanding - that it takes people to make things happen. Technology is used by people. For example machinery is used by people. It takes people to start the machines, move the machines, and most importantly program the machines. “Consider, once again, automotive technology.” Automotive technology is evolutionary. We can see how the automotive industry has evolved over many years. We can see the importance of how much technology was instrumental in the growth of the auto world. The economy has been transformed by prosperity in the automobile world due to technology, which aided in mass production, not to mention job creation for so many. Before Marx makes this statement in his essay, he points out that authors such as Tocqueville created new words and phrases as a way to make his writing relevant and as a way to reflect societal changes. “As late as 1880-81, for example, Arnold Toynbee delivered his influential lectures on the Industrial Revolution - a topic that would seem in retrospect to have made references to technology unavoidable - yet he relied exclusively on the long-established lexicon featuring such terms as mechanical discoveries, improvements, and inventions.” p. 570 This quote points to the fact that just because someone coins a phrase does not necessarily mean that it is going to catch on with the main stream. When Should Audit Firms Introduce
Analyses of Big Data Into the Audit Process?

ABSTRACT: This study investigates how the timing of the consideration of Big Data visualizations affects an
auditor’s evaluation of evidence and professional judgments. In addition, we examine whether the use of an intuitive
processing mode, as compared to a deliberative processing mode, influences an auditor’s use and evaluation of Big
Data visualizations. We conduct an experiment with 127 senior auditors from two Big 4 firms and find that auditors
have difficulty recognizing patterns in Big Data visualizations when viewed before more traditional audit evidence.
Our findings also indicate that auditors who view Big Data visualizations containing patterns that are contrary to
management assertions after they view traditional audit evidence have greater concerns about potential
misstatements and increase budgeted hours more. Overall, our results suggest that Big Data visualizations used
as evidential matter have fewer benefits when they are viewed before auditors examine more traditional audit
evidence.

I. INTRODUCTION
T
he financial statement audit process increasingly involves the use of greater amounts of data and more sophisticated
analytical tools. In order to leverage the value of new data sources and ultimately reduce the risk of material
misstatement, audit firms are now evaluating audit approaches that encompass multiple external and internal sources of
data (Yoon, Hoogduin, and Zhang 2015). Many of the new approaches involve harnessing the richness of information
contained in what is commonly referred to as Big Data. We examine auditors’ use of Big Data to identify relevant patterns that
can be used to inform their audit judgments and decisions.
Big Data consists of large, unstructured datasets that are beyond the processing capabilities of traditional querying tools
and that include data from financial and nonfinancial sources (Brown-Liburd, Issa, and Lombardi 2015). Big Data is generated
on a continuous basis from a wide variety of sources with varying degrees of veracity (Zhang, Yang, and Appelbaum 2015).

Before Marx makes this statement in his essay, he points out that authors such as Tocqueville created new words and phrases as a way to make his writing relevant and as a way to reflect societal changes. “As late as 1880-81, for example, Arnold Toynbee delivered his influential lectures on the Industrial Revolution - a topic that would seem in retrospect to have made references to technology unavoidable - yet he relied exclusively on the long-established lexicon featuring such terms as mechanical discoveries, improvements, and inventions.” p. 570 This quote points to the fact that just because someone coins a phrase does not necessarily mean that it is going to catch on with the main stream. When Should Audit Firms Introduce
Analyses of Big Data Into the Audit Process?

ABSTRACT: This study investigates how the timing of the consideration of Big Data visualizations affects an
auditor’s evaluation of evidence and professional judgments. In addition, we examine whether the use of an intuitive
processing mode, as compared to a deliberative processing mode, influences an auditor’s use and evaluation of Big
Data visualizations. We conduct an experiment with 127 senior auditors from two Big 4 firms and find that auditors
have difficulty recognizing patterns in Big Data visualizations when viewed before more traditional audit evidence.
Our findings also indicate that auditors who view Big Data visualizations containing patterns that are contrary to
management assertions after they view traditional audit evidence have greater concerns about potential
misstatements and increase budgeted hours more. Overall, our results suggest that Big Data visualizations used
as evidential matter have fewer benefits when they are viewed before auditors examine more traditional audit
evidence.

I. INTRODUCTION
T
he financial statement audit process increasingly involves the use of greater amounts of data and more sophisticated
analytical tools. In order to leverage the value of new data sources and ultimately reduce the risk of material
misstatement, audit firms are now evaluating audit approaches that encompass multiple external and internal sources of
data (Yoon, Hoogduin, and Zhang 2015). Many of the new approaches involve harnessing the richness of information
contained in what is commonly referred to as Big Data. We examine auditors’ use of Big Data to identify relevant patterns that
can be used to inform their audit judgments and decisions.
Big Data consists of large, unstructured datasets that are beyond the processing capabilities of traditional querying tools
and that include data from financial and nonfinancial sources (Brown-Liburd, Issa, and Lombardi 2015). Big Data is generated
on a continuous basis from a wide variety of sources with varying degrees of veracity (Zhang, Yang, and Appelbaum 2015).

This week the homework is rather more difficult than last week. What is different this week from last week is that most questions require a calculation or the understanding of the formula. That said most of the questions are straight forward. There are a few tricky ones though!
These questions deal with:

P/E ratio, EPS and Stock price computation

(aka Days Sales Outstanding)
This ratio considers the frequency with which the company collects on its outstanding Credit Sales in terms of number of days. There are two parts to this calculation: Accounts Receivable (A/R) Turnover, and then the Days Receivable.
Step 1:
A/R Turnover = Credit Sales ÷ Average A/R
A/R turnover represents the number of times the A/R is collected in a year.
Step 2:
Days Sales = 365 days ÷ A/R turnover
Days Sales Outstanding takes the A/R turnover and restates it into the number of days.
Fixed Asset Turnover ratio
This ratio helps analysts determine how efficiently a company uses its fixed assets to generate income.
Fixed assets are things like buildings, equipment, land, etc. They are long-term assets that benefit the company for more than one year. Fixed assets re sometimes called PP&E which stands for property, plant and equipment.
Fixed Asset TO = Net sales ÷ Net PP&E
The “Net” is important in the denominator because it means that the total value of the PP&E must be adjusted for depreciation.
P/E ratio and stock price

The Price to Earnings ratio tells us the ratio of a company’s stock price to its per share of earnings (EPS).
EPS is the portion of Net Income that is available for each share of outstanding common stock.
EPS = (Net Income – Dividends) ÷ # of shares outstanding

If we know the P/E ratio and the EPS, we can determine the stock price:
Stock price = P/E ratio x EPS

When a company is forecasting its revenue and needs into the future, it usually creates Pro Forma financial statements. These statements take the goals and expectations that the company has and turns them into dollar amounts on financial statements. If a company expects to grow at a certain rate, and have costs that are a certain amount, it must be able to predict if it can pay for all of its needs. In many cases it cannot and it must seek external financing. We can compute how much external financing is need by simply making sure that the Balance Sheet balances. Remember, Assets = Liabilities + Equity.
So, if we know the net income, the projected increase in assets and projected liabilities plus the retention ratio, we can compute the amount of Additional Funds Needed. The retention ratio is the ratio of the net income that the company keeps and does not pay out as.

You are to assume you have been recently hired by The Company and have been assigned to a team that reports to the CEO of THE COMPANY (SELECTED BY INSTRUCTOR). The head of your team is the CFO who is concerned about THE COMPANY’s current financial performance and comparison against major competitors in the industry and the impact that may have on the firm’s stock price. The CFO would like your team to provide insights that will help them to project future financial performance. Specifically, the primary question to answer is: will THE COMPANY be financially viable over the next two to three years, and which steps should be done to improve its financial stability?
THE COMPANY that is to be analyzed for this project is to be a company selected by instructor.
Alternatively, you can request approval of another publicly traded company. This request must be submitted before the end of the first week of the course. The request must include
· identification of the company by ticker symbol and name
· a reasonable and appropriate explanation of why you want to examine the alternative company
· the source of the analyst's report that will be used in the analysis (which must be submitted to me)
· acknowledgement by you that all of the specific elements of the assignment (see below) will be prepared by you and included in the final research project report

Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
