2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

3. X and Y?
In 1939, the department store chain Montgomery Ward commissioned writer
Robert L. May to scribe a book for children. They had previously bought and
given away colouring books, and decided creating original content would save
money and also be a nice good-will gesture. May came up with the idea of a
moose, but decided sticking to the traditional X made more sense. After several
name changes like Rollo and Reginald, May settled on Y.
6. Which character?
The name X had been invented by one of Y’s friends. Y thought it was
hilarious and decided to use it. He devised X - first appearing in the 30s - as an
Italian with a Greek surname. The character fitted certain prevalent anti-Semitic
stereotypes, but Y was adamant X was not Jewish.
9. Give X, Y, and Z
In gay slang, a “friend of X” is a term for a gay man. The phrase dates back at
least to World War II, when homosexuality was illegal in the United States. The
term was used as a euphemism for discussing sexual orientation without others
knowing its meaning.
The origin of the phrase is largely believed to be from the fact that Y, who
played the role of X in the film Z, was an LGBT icon.
12. ID the song and the singer
This 1949 song, a classic from the golden era of Bengali music, was
revolutionary. Not only did it stray from the traditional romantic theme in its
lyrics, but also stood out for its sheer length, not fitting the conventional 3
minute length of one side of a record of those times. Hence, it was recorded in
two parts on a double sided disc.
15. Give X and what event?
Paul Warfield Tibbets, Jr. was a Brigadier General in the United States Air
Force. His mother’s name was X Tibbets, and has been immortalised due to an
infamous event of world history, in which he was also involved.
18. Name the duo, the film, and the banner
This film banner was established in the late 40s and saw its first hit in 1949. In
one scene from the film, the heroine runs towards the hero. Violin in one hand,
he grasps her with the other. She bends backwards, striking an instinctive,
intimate pose, which gave the banner its iconic logo. Though after 1956 the two
didn’t do any more films together, the remain immortalised as a duo in the logo.
22. X and Y?
X was a Russian-American novelist and entomologist. His first nine novels were in
Russian, but he achieved international prominence after writing in English.
The Harvard Museum of Natural History, which now contains the Museum of
Comparative Zoology, still possesses X’s “genitalia cabinet” where X stored his
collection of male blue butterfly genitalia.
Y is one of his most famous works. In the market of pornography, Y is used to refer
to a young girl, frequently one who has only recently reached the age of consent,
appears to be younger than the age of consent, or child exploitation material depicting
the sexual abuse of children.
25. X?
The X effect occurs when the same event is given contradictory interpretations
by different individuals involved.
It occurs particularly where such differences arise in combination with the
absence of evidence to elevate or disqualify any version of the truth, plus the
social pressure for closure on the question.
28. X and Y?
The first time X mentioned the idea of a piece of the sort was during a lecture at
Vassar College, A Composer’s Confessions.
X told the audience that he had “several new desires, one of which was to compose a
piece of uninterrupted silence and set it to Muzak Co. It will be three or four and half
minutes long --- those being the standard lengths of “canned” music and it’s title will
be “Silent Prayer”.
“It will open with a single idea which I will attempt to make as seductive as the colour
and fragrance of a flower. The ending will approach imperceptibility”, X said.
This idea finally led to the composition of Y in 1952.
31. What is the subject of the painting?
Corpus Hypercubus is a 1954 oil-on-canvas
painting by Salvador Dali. It depicts an object
non-traditionally as the polyhedron net of a
tesseract (hypercube). It is one of the best
known paintings from the late period of his
career.
34. What do you get when you combine X, Y and
Z?
X in French simply means “the great”
Y is a demon featured in German folklore. He originally appeared in literature
as the demon in the Faust legend, and has since appeared in other works as a
stock character.
Z is a long-haired domesticated bovid found throughout the Himalayan region
of the Indian subcontinent, although in this context, the usage is probably
onomatopoeic.
47. What is being talked about?
This six and a half minute dance sequence was divided into 4 parts, intertwined
into a phantasmagoria of contrasting styles and moods. The 4 groups – kings
and warriors, sahibs, fat people, and the common people – kept in line with the
4 common classes in social hierarchy.
The dance culminates with the 4 classes positioned vertically, with the priests at
the bottom and the common people at the top, in contrast with the traditional
hierarchy.
54. X, Y and Z?
X was a song released in March 1970. Y said that he had the idea after he had a
dream about his mother during a particularly tense period in his life in 1968.
According to Y, the song’s reference to Z was not biblical. Y explained that his
mother, who dies of cancer when he was fourteen, was the inspiration for the
phrase in the lyrics.
“It was great to visit with her again. I felt very blessed to have that dream. She
got me writing X.”, Y later said.
57. X and Y?
X was a British bodybuilder, weightlifter and character actor. He played the bodyguard
Julian in “A Clockwork Orange”, in the course of which he was noticed by a certain
director.
This director went on to cast him in an iconic role, which remains his biggest
achievement in the film world. Later, he and the director fell out over allegations that
X leaked certain crucial plot points, and the director’s decision to dub the character
with someone else’s voice.
X starred in a 2015 documentary entitled Y, which is one of the most famous lines
spoken by him. The documentary deals with the role and the controversy surrounding
it.
60. X and Y?
In the Hebrew Bible, the X is the name of the garment that Joseph owned,
which was given to him by his father Jacob.
The Hebrew phrase “kethoneth passim” is translated in the King James Bible
as X, but some have suggested that the phrase may merely indicate long sleeves
or stripes.
Y’s 1971 country hit, also titled X, tells of how Y’s mother stitched together a
garment out of rags given to the family. As she sewed, she told her child the
biblical story of Joseph and his X.
63. X and Y?
Nirmal Chandra Kumar was the owner of a rare books shop in the Entally
area. His son said of him, “People called my father a human encyclopedia, but
he was actually an antiquarian. He lived in the word of books and was
engrossed by them”.
X was introduced to Nirmal Chandra by another bibliophile with encyclopedic
knowledge of colonial India. He is said to be the inspiration behind the
fictional character Y, created by X.
He passed away two years after the first film featuring Y was released.
66. Connect X and Y
X is a stock character of the Italian commedia dell’arte. Usually attired in black
Spanish dress and burlesquing a don, he was often beaten by Harlequin for his
boasting and cowardice.
Y is a couples dance from Spain, usually in triple meter, traditionally
accompanied by guitars and castanets or hand-clapping. It can be both sung
and danced. He meter is similar to that of the bolero and seguidilla.
70. Who is talking about what?
“Immediately though, something felt wrong. Very wrong. For a start, my mouth
was instantly full of this warm, gloopy liquid, with the worst aftertaste you
could ever imagine. I could feel it staining my teeth and running down my chin.
Then the ___ twitched.”
73. Connect
• A liquor which derives its flavour predominantly from juniper berries
• A fortified wine grown in Andalusia, Spain
• A sparkling wine produced in the eponymous region of France.
• A distilled alcoholic beverage made from sugarcane or its byproducts (like
molasses)
76. X and Y?
Despite emulating a feat achieved before only in 1936, X was booed off the
field in the 1984 Olympics, due to his controversial long jump performance.
On his first attempt, X cleared 8.54m. His next attempt was a foul, and he
waived off his remaining attempts as he still had heats and finals of the 200m
and 4×100m relay events to participate in.
Although X comfortably won the long jump gold, his decision to skip the
remaining attempts was construed by the fans as backing out of trying to break
the world record set in 1968 by Y. X had indeed stated that to be one of his
goals, and Y had appeared in an advertisement before the Olympics, saying “I
hope you get it, kid”.
79. Give X and Y.
X is a charity supergroup featuring mainly British and Irish musicians. It was
founded in 1984 by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise money for anti-famine
efforts in Ethiopia by releasing the song Y for the Christmas market that year.
The single became the Christmas number one on that release. Three
subsequent re-recordings of the song to raise further money for charity also
topped the charts.
82. Give X
Joe Farman, Brian Gardiner, and Jon Shanklin published a report in 1985,
which was the first discovery of X. It became widely accepted as one of the
biggest environmental and scientific discoveries of the 20th century.
The report was significant also because it was in direct contradiction with
NASA, who armed with superior instruments and computers had repeatedly
rubbished claims of X’s existence. It caused major embarrassment when
investigation revealed NASA had gathered data supporting the findings but had
overlooked it.
86. X and Y?
X came up with the idea of Y loosely based on the Disney character Goofy. X
initially wanted to cast Michael Jackson for the role, but that didn’t come about
as MJ wanted to portray Y using prosthetics while X wanted it to be totally CG.
Ahmed Best, who went on to portray Y, claimed X was also worried the hype
of casting MJ would overshadow the movie itself.
89. ID X
Before his career in film, X worked at the Response India advertising agency.
He was noted for his skill in creating one-liners and slogans, such as for the
“Banga Jiboner Anga” campaign for Boroline.
In the early 90s, X got his break into films via a Doordarshan documentary on
Vande Mataram.
He is also known (and sadly became a butt of jokes) for his social activism in a
certain field.
92. Put funda
The inspirations for this scene from an iconic film allegedly include Joseph H.
Lewis's The Big Combo and Sergio Corbucci's Django.
The director stated that a particular element of the scene was a direct homage
to a certain Kubrick film, where a similar scene was shot using the song Singin’
in the Rain.
95. Give X
Sometime around the mid 90s, the editor of a Hindi newspaper Dainik
Viswamitra started receiving calls at home from millions of youngsters, asking
for X. This led to quite a bit of chaos. He was interviewed by a gleeful media,
and became a pop icon of sorts.
98. Give X
The given exponential decay relationship is the basis for the Standard Edition
of X, first used in 1997 and formally adopted internationally as the standard
method for calculating the concerned quantity in 1999.
Z0 and b are constants whose value depend only on w, which ranges from 0-9.
Introduced by two British statisticians, it is a fine example of mathematics
helping out in non-scientific fields.
103. Give X/put funda.
“Good morning,” answered employee Ying Hang ‘Hannah’ Zhang. “How may
I help you?”
“Yes, I’d like to order 4000 lattes to go, please”, X said, grinning. “No just
kidding. Wrong number. Goodbye!”
This iconic exchange took place in 2007. Since then, the store became a sort of
pilgrimage for a certain section of society, and still gets orders for 4000 lattes.
106. Which film?
The storyline of this film resulted from a writing exercise carried out by the
director and his friend, which involved combining two disparate elements and
making a story out of it.
The director suggested “girl on a train” and his friend suggested “man who
wants to kill himself ”. The rest is history.
109. Give X, put funda
This image was taken over 10 exposures in
the period from September 23, 2003 through
January 16, 2004, using X.
What is special about the image?
113. Give X and the band
As with most of their other songs, X was given a nickname during writing and
rehearsals. The band called it “The Money Song” as they were sure it would bring
commercial success. Sure enough, it became their highest rated track, and is widely
regarded as the best in the genre.
For the album X was part of, the band incorporated more rock elements (like more use
of the guitar) while retaining their trademark ethereal feel.
X was used in the 2006 BBC series Planet Earth, closing credits of the 2006 FA cup
final, trailers for Slumdog Millionaire, and many others.
X also lent its name to something very popular in the Kolkata F&B scene.
121. Give X and FITB
The director X of Bubblewrap films, an ad agency in Mumbai, came into light
in 2015 by filming a famous ad __________
X’s newest venture was the feature film Tumhari Sulu, starring Vidya Balan.
124. ID X, put funda
Conceding to the demands of the natives, Google came to the Faroe islands to
add it to Google Street View. However, it was not easy to capture the hilly and
complex topography of the islands.
Eventually, they found a solution and the operation was accordingly codenamed
X.
127. Give X and Y
Contrary to popular belief, bringing about an X is not that simple. There are
two objects that play a key role in the process, called a ‘football’ and a ‘biscuit’.
A complicated process involving the two takes place, which brings about the X.
The object Y, which is popularly believed to cause X, is in reality used mainly to
summon a butler to bring some Coke.
130. Give X
A X is a new unit of time devised by Facebook, defined as 1/705,600,000 of a
second (making it slightly longer than a nanosecond). It evenly divides the
following numbers – 8,16, 22.05, 24, 25, 30, 32, 44.1, 48, 50, 60, 90, 100, 120.
It was launched to eliminate problems with handling fractions while converting
between frame rates of different devices/platforms, thus theoretically making
creation and viewing of videos easier.
133. Put funda
Shown here is the track profile of X,
designed and made into a scale model in
2010 by Julijonas Urbonas, a PhD candidate
at the Royal College of Art, London. Its
maximum height is 510m
Urbonas stated its practical applications to
be X or Y.
