• John Lawrence Nettleship was a British school teacher
who taught chemistry at Wyedean School,
Gloucestershire.
• Nettleship described himself in hindsight as “a short-
tempered chemistry teacher with long hair...[and a]
gloomy, malodorous laboratory.” When he was first
questioned about his links to character by journalists, he
said: “I was horrified when I first found out. I knew I was a
strict teacher but I didn't think I was that bad.”

Cup by drawing on aggregate against Iran, despite leading 2–0 in the second half
of the final match of qualification.
• The curse was supposedly lifted by John Safran during his 2004 TV series John
Safran vs. God. After reading the story in Warren's book, Safran travelled to
Mozambique and hired a new witch doctor to channel the original to reverse the
curse. The following year, the X qualified for the 2006 World Cup.

• Investigators in Alabama are reportedly examining a claim of
possible elder abuse of an 88-year-old person. A neighbour of
the person told the Guardian that he had been contacted by an
investigator from the Alabama human resources department
asking about the person’s welfare.
• The state’s securities commission spoke to the person asking if
he/she was a victim of financial fraud. The person’s mental
condition is also in question, with some saying he/she is lucid and
has independent thinking and some saying he/she is forgetful,
confused and depressed, and some saying the his/her degree of
cogency depends on the day. However, the investigating officer
said that despite some memory problems, and the fact that the
person is in a wheelchair and can barely hear or see: “There is

• On 8th May 2003, European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruled in favour of a
Slovak handball player called Maros X when it passed a judgement stating
that citizens of countries which have signed European Union Association
Agreements have the same right to work and the freedom of movement
within the European Union as EU citizens. Maros X, who was born in
Czechoslovakia, represented a German second division handball team since
1997. According to The German Handball Association's Rule 15, member
clubs were prohibited from including more than two non-EU citizens and X
was left out by his club in 2000 as they had already included two non-EU
citizens.
• Slovakia was not a member of EU then, but it did have an Association
Agreement. Maros first approached a German higher court, which referred
the matter to ECJ. The ECJ gave its landmark judgement in favour of Maros.
It is now called the X Rule.
