to achieve operational efficiency
ACHIEVING OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE BY GOING DIGITAL
D
igital disruption is happening
across manufacturing and
other industrial sectors, and
businesses in these segments
have begun to harness the benefits of
digitization across their value chains.
Research suggests that a significant
number of incumbents across
industries —as much as 40 percent—
will be left wounded, probably mortally,
by digital disruption over the next five
years.
A Cisco survey of more than 600
senior manufacturing decision-makers
across 13 countries (Australia, Brazil,
Canada, China, France, Germany,
India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, South
Korea, United Kingdom, United States)
from a range of manufacturing related
segments found that 79 percent of
senior manufacturing leaders—both
industrial machine builders and end-
user manufacturers—believe that digital
disruption will drive a moderate to major
impact at their companies in the next
three years.
That combined with pressure on
manufacturers arising from reduced
pools of technical expertise, increased
global competition, and market
volatility, places any competitive edge
at a premium. As a result, nearly all
manufacturing sectors—automotive,
consumer packaged goods, high tech,
and industrial machinery—continue to
feel an acute need for more expansive
service offerings and technology
innovations.
“Digitization, fueled by the power of
IP, allows the entire manufacturing
process and entire supply chain to
be completely automated, secured,
and managed as a global entity.
This drives greater outcomes such
as improved efficiencies, reduced
downtime, greater resource utilization,
and increased returns on investment in
a shorter time,” says Tirthankar Mitra,
Director, Commercial Sales, Cisco India
and SAARC.
Many manufacturers are embarking
on a digital transition journey to
improve collaboration on the shop floor
and increase workforce efficiency.
Consider, Jubilant Food Works (JFW)
market leader in the organized pizza
market. Having a network of 959
Domino’s Pizza restaurants and 67
Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants across
India, JFW was looking for an agile and
robust technology platform that could
support digitization and lay a futuristic
technology road map to help them stay
ahead of the competition.
JFW wanted to ensure seamless
collaboration between all its stores’
staff and managers across India. The
primary ask was for a solution that
was easy to deploy and maintain. JFW
also wanted all their warehouses to be
connected in order to enable mobility
for warehouse employees and was
additionally seeking a robust network
infrastructure for its new Noida facility.
JFW partnered with Cisco to deploy a
converged Infrastructure that included
a real-time collaboration solution for
their headquarters, branch offices
and stores across India. Part of the
deployment was a mobility component
to integrate their warehouse supply
chain operations. The network
infrastructure was redesigned and an
agile network roadmap provided along
with high definition wireless and the
latest collaboration suite to cater to the
growing business needs.
According to Rahul Puri, VP IT, JFW,
“Cisco’s next generation technology
platform has empowered us to take a
big leap on the journey of digitization.
The integrated collaboration solution
helps to enhance employee productivity
and foster a collaborative environment
across the organization.”
The future readiness and scalability
of the technology solution helps the
network Infrastructure meet higher
workloads. According to Pushkar
Chandra, Sr. Manager IT, JFW, “The
agile IT infrastructure is helping to roll
out new applications to meet growing
business demands at a faster pace. A
clearly defined ROI and lower TCO are
added benefits.”
Intas a leading, vertically integrated
global pharmaceutical formulation
development, manufacturing and
marketing company headquartered in
Gujarat was looking to set up a state-of-
the-art corporate office with new ways
of communications including video
to enhance collaboration across the
organization - both domestic and global
offices. Intas also wanted campus
networking and mobility with guest
access for the new corporate office.
Intas partnered with Cisco to deploy
an integrated networking solution
to enhance the user experience.
Cisco conducted a successful Proof
of Concept before the deployment.
Cisco’s integrated architecture
that combines campus LAN and
collaboration solution helps to
demonstrate the power of collaboration
to address training requirements.
Speaking about the deployment Nitin
Parmar, Sr Vice President - IT says,
“The superior video quality in the multi-
location in-house video conferencing
solution from Cisco which includes
Telepresence endpoints has been a
great benefit for us to communicate
seamlessly with each other and
enhance the user experience.”
The business outcomes and
benefits of going digital are clear.
From improvements in visibility,
security operational efficiency and
productivity, to reduced downtime
and increased supply chain flexibility,
the results deliver a real competitive
advantage to any manufacturer or any
other manufacturing segment. From
being off-line and unconnected, to a
connected production environment,
to more a holistically connected
digital enterprise and all the way to
a more sophisticated—and simpler—
supply chain orchestration, the entire
journey requires commitment, as well
as laying a foundation with the right
building blocks.
