This document discusses culturally relevant pedagogy and its ability to positively influence identity formation for school-aged children from urban communities. It provides context on the purposes of education in the US and challenges they pose for diverse student populations. Theories of childhood development and identity formation are examined. Culturally relevant pedagogy seeks to combat how dominant culture in schools can undermine student identities and achievement. The document analyzes how hip hop pedagogy, as a form of culturally relevant teaching, can help students make meaningful connections between their lived experiences and academic content. Overall, it argues culturally relevant approaches are needed to support student success by recognizing and valuing the cultures and communities they come from.
