Eternal Vigilance is a 500-pound bronze statue created by local artist John Silk Deckard and installed in front of the Erie Art Museum in 1983. Deckard depicted the work as a "heroic, self-clutching figure" and hoped viewers would get involved in unraveling its meaning. The statue took over a year to complete using the lost wax bronze casting technique, with Deckard first making a small wax model and then constructing the larger statue out of quarter-inch wax sheets.

Jean Cocteau said that film would never be as important as writing until cameras were as easy to use as pen and paper. For the first time in history that's true. The 1 in 3 Campaign and DIYdoc teamed up to unlock the potential of having a video camera in every smartphone, empowering youth to tell stories rooted in their community. The DIYdoc app leverages filmmaking best practices by presenting users with a storytelling arc, crafted by a filmmaker, they can use to film their story, and finishes their video with campaign branding. This crowdsourced content is shared via the 1 in 3 Campaign's existing network of supporters on social media and is organized to support local policy work. This project is about empowering youth to be content creators, the power of visual storytelling to achieve culture change, and creating content to influence decision-makers.

Evaluation of a pilot game-based intervention to prevent HIV among young men...YTH
Gamification has been widely and successfully applied in business. However, attempts to apply gamification principles to health have been limited. We have developed and evaluated a pilot intervention using a gamification platform and a game to motivate young men who have sex with men in Mexico City to learn about HIV/AIDS and STIs and test for HIV and syphilis. We will present the methodology of the evaluation as well as the quantitative and qualitative results of our assessment. We will also discuss the key challenges of implementing the intervention and their effect on the results of the evaluation. Lastly, we will discuss our plans to scale up the intervention in Mexico and gamification’s potential to increase demand of health services

Research Paper: Museum Visit
This paper focuses on my visit to a museum and the art work presented there. I have visited the museum last week particularly for this assignment. The museum name is Dallas Museum of Art.
Part # 1
For this part I have selected an art work named “standing female figure.” Standing Female Figure is belongs to the Mexico: state of Tamaulipas of Huastec culture. This art piece is a part of Early Post-classic period, c. A.D. 900 - 1250 Sandstone Gift of Norbert Schimmel in memory of Evelin Schimmel, 1989.82. It is presented in Dallas Museum of Art. This sculpture is made up of clay. It is of brown color, and visually it is a lady who is standing straight. Its condition is good, but I saw few cracks on it which shows it’s a part of a very old heritage.
Although there is no long description of the art piece on the wall of museum, but the as I research about “standing female figure,” I found that the artist intended to describe the rights of a woman of that time. At the time, in Mexico there are near to no rights given to the woman and the artist observed that issue and created a sculpture with clay with a hope to present a true image and role of a woman in the society. This sculpture “standing female figure” gives a message of equal rights and a very important role of females in building up the community.
In early post-classic period, c. A.D. 900 – 1250, the Mexican people failed to provide equal rights to both the genders and discriminate among male and female. The very important point and message is hidden in this sculpture “standing female figure” that woman have a very important role to create a successful society. There are many emotions connected with this art piece because after thousands of years later this social issue still exists in our world, there are so many places where we swab the rights of women and trying to compress their roles in the society. This art piece “standing female figure” is able to take you in that time.
Here is my picture with the “Standing Female Figure.” It was a great experience of visiting the museum and witnesses so many artworks under one roof. This gave me an opportunity to analysis and learned more about art and the history and messages attached to them. Standing Female Figure seems so old and unique in a way and also describing its message of the female role in a society of its time very simply. It’s a beautiful clay statue, standing and welcoming people who came to visit her and simply explaining the artist’s message.
Part # 2
Recently, I got a chance to visit the "Dallas Museum of Art" for the first time. That evening allowed me to study and examine art on a significant level by building skills and relationships with artworks by the decades. I was assigned the responsibility to choose three artworks and to record a social analysis highlighting the components and beliefs of art before stu ...

3. Social, Cultural, and Historical Context Eternal Vigilance was created by local artist John Silk Deckard John Silk Deckard has depicted his work of art as “a heroic, self-clutching figure.” The statue was installed in front of the Erie Art Museum in 1983, located on State Street. Statue weighs over 500 pounds It took over a year to complete the sculpture, which was constructed from a smaller model made out of wax.
4. Social, Cultural, and Historical Context Contd. Eternal Vigilance also known as “a moment of tortured humanity captured in 500 pounds of bronze” Deckard hoped to “get the viewers involved in unraveling and discovering the work.” He describes the piece himself as “a heroic, self-clutching figure.”
5. How to make such a sculpture Created through the ancient process known as the lost wax bronze casting technique Eternal Vigilance took one year to complete Deckard first made a small figure which he used as a guide in constructing the larger-than-life-sized statue out of quarter inch wax sheets. Corrected flaws by flame polishing After all of the niches were complete the 50 pound wax piece wastaken to a Cleveland foundry for the bronze casting process.
13. PERSONAL CONNECTION: KELSEY When I first saw the statue I thought it was weird and sort of absurd. I didn’t understand why it was the welcoming piece at the steps of the museum, because I found it to be sort of scary! After researching this figure and actually understanding the meaning behind it I am now able to understand its connotations and make connections to my own life. Now knowing that Deckard made this piece to symbolize himself as a welcoming self-clutching figure, allows me to think and reflect on new everyday findings and art work in my own life.
14. PERSONAL CONNECTION: KAYLA I saw this statue a few times before actually thinking anything of it. At first I thought that it was kind of weird just sitting there in the middle. However, once I read about it and actually took the time to look at it I thought very different about it. I now think that it is very unique, and a great piece of art work. It reminds me of a beast/man combined together. It’s a huge piece of work, and I think the location is a great place now because it catches your eye from even a far.
15. PERSONAL CONNECTION: SETH -From a personal standpoint, I noticed the beautiful detail, which allowed Deckard to show the statues true emotions. Overall, a very powerful piece of art, as I studied every aspect of its features.
16. Curricular Standpoint From a curricular standpoint, students can use different aspects of math, history, and English to better understand the Deckard’s artistic message. Math= students can decipher the dimensions and measurements of the statue’s many details of the human body. History=students can do extensive research to understand the statues overall meaning in art history and its impact to the city of Erie, Pa. English=students can come up with creative poetry, lyrics, or stories to express what the statues means to them aesthetically
17. Key Ideas: Keep in mind the location of the sculpture The significance of the sculpture The gender of the sculpture The history behind the sculpture Real form Curiosity questions about the sculpture How much time went into it Emphasis on shapes and size Simplicity yet complex
18. Line of inquiry: Aesthetic How does this represent texture as elements of design? How do elements effect the importance of design in regards to this piece of art?
19. LINE OF INQUIRY: PEDAGOGICAL I think most people have no idea what the statue stands for as they pass it. I feel as if it is overlooked and questioned. There isn’t any information near the statue so to know the history and reasoning behind it you have to do the research! People see this statue that work and live in Erie, some drive past it and see it every day. I think its possible for people to relate to the statue. Its sort of hidden emotions embellish a world of the unknown. Just like all of our lives, tomorrow is never guaranteed, nothing is for sure. I think this piece was chosen for the entrance of the museum because it poses so many unanswered questions. It makes the viewer wonder what’s going to be inside. It really opens up and the mind and makes you ask questions to yourself.
20. EXPERIMENTAL ACTIVITIES Pose as this statue. Once your posing as it, have a friend take your picture in that position Once you have your picture try to recreate it using wire and clay Sit next to the statue in that same way for a period of time and see how people react to you being there. Document these reactions and reflect back upon them Have students measure the statue and document the large mass of the object. You can have them guess how much the statue weighs and then tell them the actual amount. Have the students create a poem or song about the statue and what it means to them
