EMT Skills Improvement Assessment

George Antonelli, Captain
SIGNIFICANCE
• Identify the types of skills new and
prospective EMTs within the organization
need improvement on.
• Develop future training programs for new
recruits to effectively respond to medical
emergencies.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
• Analyze the confidence levels of new
emergency medical technicians (EMTs) in
conducting basic life support and
responding to medical emergencies
• Propose methods of improving EMTs’
skills competency in patient quality care.
• Conducted a survey study with 14
members of Madison Park First Aid
measuring EMT skills performance
comfort levels of new and prospective
EMTs.
• Measured comfort level of subjects by
selecting EMT skills they can and cannot
perform independently.
• Performed a qualitative analysis of EMTs
by documenting improvements in EMT
skills competency members I supervised on
calls.
Of the sample size cohort (n=14), triaging
was the skill most members felt
uncomfortable performing independently
with 6 subjects (42.85%). Taking vitals,
patient assessment, and delivery of oral
report to nurses were equally followed as
second highest in discomfort with 5
subjects (35.71%).
