Aa seasoned Corporate and Banking Lawyer
with rich experience from more than three
decades in the industry. He founded DivinaLaw in
2006 and worked meticulously towards the growth
and development of the firm. With his determination
and competency, DivinaLaw stands today as one of

Before he entered private law practice, Nilo was the
former Executive Vice President, General Counsel,
and Corporate Secretary of a leading Philippine
bank. Nilo is equally active with his roles in the
academic forefront, serving as the Dean of the
Faculty of Civil Law of the University of Santo
Tomas from 2009 to the present. He also teaches at
the University of the Philippines College of Law. He
was formerly president and chairman of the
Philippine Association of Law Schools.

Turning a Childhood Dream into a Lifelong
Reality
Nilo wanted to be a lawyer as early as the age of six.
There was no other profession for him except to be a
lawyer. Nilo's source of motivation was his dad. His
dad told him that being a lawyer was an ideal
profession for him as he loves to talk, discuss, be in
front of crowds, and more. His dad told him, 'perhaps
you are meant to be a lawyer'.
“Of course, we do not know what life would present
along the way. So many opportunities presented
themselves along the way but what is clear to me is
that at the very outset, I knew what I wanted in life, I
wanted to become a lawyer,” said Nilo.

15. clients that contact him. It has always surprised him how
little most lawyers know about what qualified investigators
can offer them to build, fix or defend a case they're working
on. He sees this most in the Family Law sector but it
applies to every form of law. As lawyers begin to learn what
his firm can offer and more importantly how different his
firm is to deal with than competing firms, relationships (and
many friendships) grow and “it truly feels like you're
helping your friend solve a problem. That's rewarding.”
What Gives Axis Vero an Edge over your Peers?

Hurdles on the Way
“Although we are investigators, the challenges we face are
very similar to those we see in young lawyers or paralegals.
When you come in the door you want to be the best on day
one, but there is no script to achieve this and it depends on
your own attitude as well as who you meet along the way as
to whether or not you learn anything at all on the trip. I
think the biggest hurdle (certainly for investigators) is
finding someone that is invested in making you better at
what you do. In many cases, people are happy to keep you
where you are rather than risk you succeeding beyond
them”, asserted Axis Geffen.
From the Founder's Desk
I started writing Security Site Post Orders for Burns
International Security Services at the age of 14. My mom
was a Security Site Supervisor for the company at that time
but lacked English writing skills and so I helped her. At the
age of 18, the company surprised me with my first Security
Guard Licence and gave me a Security Guard job. I
remained a Guard for several years learning about the
security industry, client care, and the importance of solid
documentation.
After a few years, I was hired as a subcontractor by a
Private Investigation Agency and very quickly became
popular in the field because of my superior documentation
skills, attention to detail, and client support. I worked for a
few investigation agencies this way. In 2015, one of the PI
firms that I worked for gave me an ultimatum, I could either
open my own firm and continue to service all of my clients,
including his company, or I could become an exclusive
employee to his company and stop working for the other
security and investigation companies in our industry.
“This was a difficult choice to make because the agency
that issued the ultimatum was my best customer at the time;
however, becoming exclusive would mean that nearly a
dozen other agencies would have to drop TSCM services
from their offering to the public. I agreed to open my own
firm and the day that I did, the agency that forced the
ultimatum terminated my contract stating that I was now a
competitor to them. Luckily, the remainder of my client base
appreciated that I did not sell them out and work began to
come in almost right away. Over the years I've trained
hundreds of security officers and private investigators and
in turn, I've learned tremendous skill sets from some of the
best investigators in the industry.” In the present day, Axis
Vero employs dozens of competent private investigators
and Mr. Geffen imparts that knowledge to them.
“Collectively, we've built this firm into the Best
Investigative Support Firm – Canada Wide (as we've been
recognized for the last three (3) consecutive years and our
clients include government agencies, law enforcement
bodies, charitable organizations, law firms (around the

19. He believes that everyone should have access to proper
legal representation, and in turn, make informed decisions
on how to proceed with whatever issue they may face. He
initially wanted to become a litigator and to defend the
weak and marginalized, but considering the political and
social climate at the time and how uncertain the justice
system was, it was impossible to go very far in terms of
practicing within that area of law in an imperfect
democracy. So, he decided to switch gear and do corporate
law instead but still with the aim of fighting for his clients
and providing the best possible solution for them, just from
a different perspective. It is to ensure that these corporations
will provide more job opportunities for Indonesians.
Bagus worked as an in-house counsel and intended to keep
doing so, but at one point in his career, he sat down and had
a think about whether he wanted to stay in this corporate
system where everything was set and they all did their own
tasks or if he wanted to go out and start his own firm – the
latter option struck a nerve and that was what sparked the
beginning of BE Partners.
He wanted to start a firm with the right idealism and
purpose, to create a working environment that puts clients
first, and be a safe space for young talent to develop.
Teaching is a very pivotal aspect for him as a lawyer so
apart from mentoring the lawyers at the firm, Bagus also
lectures at universities and teaches company law so as to
share knowledge on current issues along with the legal
theories behind it for a more practical approach in applying
their knowledge as lawyers.
“It was never my intention to become an influential figure,
I’m not actively involved in any sort of association or
group. I do, however, focus on growing the firm and

Bagus always approaches his clients’ problems from a

“I solve problems for a living, which can seem to be quite a
mundane job for some people. For me, it’s the excitement in
taking charge and finding creative and out-of-the-box
solutions for my client's legal issues. Having to think of all
the angles and challenging the way we think is very
stimulating and fulfilling”, apprised Bagus.
From the Founder’s Desk
Back when I first started working as a lawyer, because a lot
of information was only privy to a select few, it became a
valuable commodity that people were looking for. However,
now it is very easy to get any and all information with the
help of the internet nowadays; all the rules, regulations, and
even cases and legal forums are inline and accessible to
anyone. The challenge is to improve the critical and
analytical skills to get only the most relevant information
and to underline the upcoming and potential legal and
business risks.
So, the skill highlighted in this new age of lawyers is how
to think critically and analyse the relevant information.
Connecting the dots from the legal issue at hand, what the
law says, how we want to move forward, the implications
of said action, and how we present it to the client is what
sets us apart.
New and more diverse specialties are also on the rise given
the number of emerging industries that have started popping
up on a global scale such as e-commerce, blockchains, and
cryptocurrencies which did not exist when I first started my
career.
Bagus’s Advice to Aspiring Entrepreneurs
Just go for it, give it all you’ve got and let it fall into place.
Regardless of how much control you think you have; things
will always take their course. Prepare as best you can, plan
as best you can, but don’t be so stuck in your ways that
you're not able to redirect and take the necessary steps to
move forward.
“All big dreams require steps; it's a process
that requires time and e ort. Rome was but
once a dream, built brick by brick over a long
period of time. Consistency and determination
are the foundation. Make sure to start,
everyone has big dreams but only some follow
through and actually do it. Failure is never a
reason to quit, there is always a lesson in it that
we take and keep in mind moving forward.”

guidance of C. F. Tsai, who is the first patent practitioner in
his country who both has technological and law
backgrounds and is qualified as a local attorney-at-law.
A thought leader with 39 amazing years of experience, Mr
Tsai handled diversified disputes over intellectual property
laws. He has extensively been involved in works related to
mechanical, electric, electronic, civil engineering, chemical,
semiconductor, and medical fields since his involvement in

In academics, Mr Tsai had his marine engineering
background and majored in National Chiao Tung
