The survey results show that trailers are the most effective way to advertise a film and that audiences are most attracted to a film by its plot. A majority of respondents said they would be more interested in a biopic about a real musician than a fictional character. However, original music soundtracks were shown to attract audiences more than famous soundtracks.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

2. What is your gender?
Male
Female
My survey results are predominantly female so I will take this into account when analysing
my survey. The genre of my trailer is not gender specific so a gender split will make no
difference to the results of my survey. There is enough of an equal gender split to produce
accurate results.
3. Which category below includes your age?
17 or younger
18-20
21-29
30-39
40-49
50-59
60+
60 or older
My survey results are from a relatively young group of people. My target audience is all ages
so there is a nice mixture of ages to complete my survey. The results include answers from
teenagers and middle aged people, these allow my full target audience to be exploited in
answering the questions.
4. How often do you visit the cinema?
More than once a week
Once a week
Once a fortnight
Once a month
More than once a month
More than once a year
Less than once a year
These results show that most people in my selected audience visit the cinema around once
a month. These are not heavy cinema goers but they do regularly go and see films that
attract them. These are the perfect audience because the trailer has to attract them to see
the film.
5. What factors make you decide to see a film?
Trailers
TV Adverts
Interviews
Internet Campaigns
Posters
Banners
The results clearly show that trailers are the most effective method of advertising a film, and
one that most people can easily respond to and take notice of.
6. Do trailers which show you too much of the plot make
you less likely to go and see the film?
Yes
No
This only narrowly shows that people do not mind trailers showing too much of the film. It
appears from these results that the majority prefer to see the best bits of the film and not
be left too much in the dark.
7. In a trailer what attracts you most to see a film?
Plot
Actors
Location
Soundtrack
Special FX
Titles
This shows that it is the plot of a film that most attracts people to go and see it. This helps me
as it shows that the trailer has to centre around the plot and that the plot has to be clearly
shown and exploited in the trailer for maximum effect.
8. Would a music biopic about a famous musician attract
you more than one of a fictional character?
Yes
No
These results show that a music biopic about a famous musician would be more interesting
to an audience than that of a fictional character. I will have to take this into account when
deciding on the plot of my trailer. I will have to judge how difficult the recreation of an
existing person would be and how to show time periods if I were to create a trailer based on
a real person.
9. Does famous music soundtracks attract you more
than an original soundtrack written for the film?
Yes
No
According to the results shown here, original music soundtracks attract an audience more to
see a film. This is good for me as it will be easier to use copyright or originally created music
in my trailer. It also shows that famous music soundtracks are not that popular with the
audience.
