2. Tragedy posters often show the characters in despair or pain. Dark colours are
often used in order to signify the dark ending. Most tragedies have a romantic
spin on them so couples can also be found on the cover of the posters.
TRAGEDY POSTERS
3. In Romance posters mostly couples can be found on the cover. We can also
see a significant place and light/warm colours are usually used in the poster to
create a heart-warming effect.
ROMANCE POSTERS
4. In Action posters it is common to see the hero on the cover. Usually we can
also see their superpower shown (also a lot of muscle and body to define their
gender and strength).
ACTION POSTERS
5. In Comedy posters it is common to see the main character with their
friends/family. It also common to see the character with a weird/funny weird
face expression in order to hint their personality or storyline.
COMEDY POSTERS
6. In Horror posters we can usually see the villain/victim being shown.
Usually the character which is on the poster is possessed or injured/scared
in order to intrigue the audience.
HORROR POSTERS
7. Teaser posters, which are early promotional posters which do not give a lot away about
the movie and stay very basic.
Character posters, which usually reveal the same amount of information as the actual
posters except the focus on one character which allows the movie to attract the fans of a
specific actor (which is playing a role and so is displayed on the poster) generating more
‘buzz’ about the movie.
Main poster, which is usually released close to the exhibition date, this poster type gives
a lot of information about what actors play, when the release date is and some also show
who the movie is directed/produced by (again to attract attention and more viewers).
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT
TYPES OF POSTERS?
8. Film posters are usually shown in
various places:
• Cinemas
• On public transport e.g.. Side
of a bus
• Billboards
• Street walls
They are shown in those places as
the audience is able to view them
at any time. They are also eye-
catching because of their size and
location.
WHERE DO FILM POSTERS GET
SHOWN AND WHY?
9. The standard poster size is called one sheet. It is 27 inches by 41 inches (portrait
format).
Bus stop or subway posters are 40 inches by 60 inches (portrait format)
For billboards, twenty four sheets, 246 inches by 108 is used.
WHAT IS THE TYPICAL SIZE FOR
POSTERS?
10. The posters are seen as appealing to the audience by leaving them with the
enigma of who the character is, what happened to them and what the story is.
This is created through the use of image, lighting and MES. It is also created
by title, font and slogans.
Does the appeal/attraction differ then that of the poster?
The attraction of the poster is aimed at the wider audience than that of the
trailer. This is because anyone is able to see a poster as I t is advertised
everywhere and it is not age restricted. This means the poster must be aimed
at everyone so a wider audience can be reached.
HOW ARE THE POSTERS
APPEALING/ATTRACTIVE TO THE
AUDIENCE?
12. MAIN IMAGE
The main image on the poster is usually the main character/s, this is so
that the audience knows who the main role is being played by and how
the character is being portrayed.
13. TITLES/CREDITS
Titles and credits are usually placed at the bottom of the poster, this is so that the main
attention Is not
taken away from the characters but audiences are also able to see who the movie is
directed/produced by. The titles differ in placement but are
In larger, bolder font so that the audiences attention is partially drawn to it but again not fully.
14. RELEASE DATE
The release date is usually placed at the bottom of the poster. Teaser posters use the phrase ‘’coming
soon’’ Instead of putting a actual date in order to generate attention and gossip about when the
movie will actually be out. Main posters include their full date at the bottom to inform the audience,
this is usually done closer to the date so that the wait is not long enough for the audience to lose
interest.
15. RATINGS
Ratings do not have a specific placement on posters. They are usually used to attract the
audiences attention by showing them how good the movie seems to be. Rg. Someone is
more likely to watch a movie which has a 5 star rating rather than 1 star.
16. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE
BETWEEN DIFFERENT
SUBGENRES?
Romance Tragedy
- Main character falls in love
- Problem prohibiting the
relationship
Action Drama
- Car chase scene
- Someone usually dies
Action Thriller
- Mysterious circumstances/characters
- Someone usually dies
Crime Thriller
-Someone usually dies
- Mysterious character
17. WHAT DO SOME POSTERS MAKE
THEIR PRIORITY?
Names of actors
Main actors
Title of the movie
This is because these are seen
as the most important features
of the film. The names of the
actors attract new audiences
which help to promote and
spread the movie. Showing
main chcaters also allows the
audience to get a initial ‘feel’ of
the movie and what it will be
like. The title of the movie is a
essential as without it the
audience cannot find the movie
and the attraction is lost.
