Creating Buzz: Marketing in the Age of Social MediaAlex S.
Social media has become an essential marketing tool for companies, allowing them to reach a vast audience and generate buzz around their brand. Content marketing through social platforms like YouTube and Twitter can be highly effective if the content resonates with customers and gives them a reason to engage with and share the brand. However, social media also presents risks as messages can spread unpredictably. Early pioneers of social media marketing like Dove and Taco Bell demonstrate how engaging, authentic content and interactions build customer relationships and drive online buzz. While social media brings risks of loss of message control, it has fundamentally changed marketing and companies must embrace these new channels to stay successful.

Technology has many benefits for seniors and society. It has increased life expectancy through medical advances and allows seniors to live more active lifestyles through devices that track health. The senior population is growing rapidly and will double by 2040, showing the need for technologies that can help aging populations. Technologies also continue to evolve in other areas like electric vehicles that may become driverless, and private space travel that could offer trips to space within a few years. Technologies have connected people in new ways through video chat and access to information online.
This document discusses the impact of social media and technology on mental health and relationships. It notes that while social media allows people to curate positive versions of themselves, increased screen time can lead to social isolation and cyberbullying. Parents have valid concerns about children's social media usage contributing to mental health issues. The document advocates understanding how social media affects mental health to help prevent issues and finding a balance with technology.
Reading Between The Lines (of Text of Code)jess Shapiro
The document discusses how print and digital media can coexist and complement each other. It provides examples showing that online content and print materials, such as books, magazines and newspapers, have formed a symbiotic relationship where one does not replace the other. Readers frequently use both print and digital formats, with e-book readers also purchasing more printed books on average. Publishers are exploring subscription models for ebooks and ways to gather user data to better target audiences. Overall, the document argues that print and digital media can thrive together by capitalizing on each format's strengths.
The document discusses how access to digital information and the internet is unequal in society. It notes that the elderly, poor, and uneducated have less access and ability to use digital resources than other groups. While technology has provided many benefits, these groups risk being left behind or facing greater challenges due to the digital divide. Potential solutions proposed include increasing access through public programs, training, and starting digital education early in schools.
Location based marketing (LBM) uses mobile marketing to target mobile users within a certain geographic area. It allows companies to send targeted advertisements and offers to customers based on their current location through mobile apps and services. LBM is an emerging form of real-time advertising that is increasing in use as smartphone ownership rises. While LBM provides opportunities for targeted outreach, companies must consider users' privacy and gain consent to use location data.
Audio books: Is reading the new listening?Cayley Goschen
The audiobook industry has grown rapidly, reaching $2.5 billion in sales in 2015. Audiobooks appeal to many because they allow people to listen while multitasking and fit reading into busy schedules. Listeners are also drawn to audiobooks because hearing a performance can further stimulate interest and bring stories to life in a unique way. While some argue audiobooks could replace reading, they may actually support and enhance the reading experience by making it more accessible.
Instagram has over 500 million active monthly users and is an important platform for brands to engage with customers. Engagement with brands is much higher on Instagram than other social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest. Visual content is very effective on Instagram - 93% of purchases are influenced by visual elements, and the brain processes images 60,000 times faster than text. Most major brands now have an Instagram presence, and those with over 100,000 followers have grown their following by 163% in just two years. Therefore, Instagram marketing is crucial for brands to build their audience and influence consumer purchases.
Heavy social media use has been linked to depression in teens and young adults. Studies have shown that heavy users, defined as using social media for more than 2 hours per day, are 300% more likely to be depressed than occasional users. There are a few reasons for this: passive social media use can lead to envy, fear of missing out, and lower self-esteem; exposure to cyberbullying increases the likelihood of depression; and excessive social media use replaces activities that are better for physical and mental health like social interaction, exercise, and quality sleep. The article recommends limiting social media use and seeking help from a mental health professional if heavy use is causing depression.
This document discusses the risks to children from excessive and unsupervised technology use. It notes that teens are twice as likely to communicate digitally than in person, and 59% have made online friends. However, this leaves them open to risks like sexual solicitation, as 13% of teens have experienced this. Only 15% of online risks are discovered by parents. Victims of internet-initiated sex crimes, which primarily target minors, often suffer long-term negative effects. The document stresses that while technology may seem harmless, children need monitoring to avoid being targeted by online predators.
Social Media: Corporate Reputation at RiskAlex Schaerer
This document discusses the importance of managing corporate reputation on social media. It notes that with over 2 billion Facebook and 300 million Twitter users, social media allows for greater scrutiny of organizations. Poor communication or hidden facts can damage brands, while transparency builds trust. The risks of social media include reputation damage, information disclosure, and legal issues. However, having a public relations strategy and being responsive in crises can help mitigate risks. The document provides tips for protecting corporate reputation, such as responding quickly to issues and developing communication channels.
The document discusses the impact of technology on developing child brains. It notes that 75% of children under 8 have access to smartphones or tablets and are part of the "Touch Screen Generation". However, overexposure to technology has been linked to executive functioning deficits, attention deficits, impaired learning, and decreased ability to self-regulate. While banning technology altogether is not realistic, the document advocates for enforcing a balance that allows children to learn digital skills without impeding development.
Teen usage of social media has increased dramatically, with 72% using YouTube and 68% using Instagram. This increased usage has negatively impacted teen mental health, with 1 in 4 reporting poor mental health, distress, suicidal thoughts, or unmet mental health needs. Social media shapes teens' conceptions of beauty and alters how they think and interact by promoting unrealistic representations and social norms. It can also contribute to lack of independent thinking, peer pressure, cyberbullying, eating disorders, and depression in vulnerable teens. To help prevent these issues, parents can limit social media use, monitor the content teens engage with, and regularly discuss their mental well-being.
Machine Learning: The Next Revolution in Online AdvertisingCameron Hudson
In an age where advertising is “just part of our surroundings, a kind of cultural backdrop”, [13] is machine learning the key to standing out and creating lasting impressions? Originally for FILM 240 - Media & Culture at Queen's University
The document summarizes how social media usage has risen drastically over the past decade and how it is affecting people's minds and behaviors. Some key points include:
- 65% of American adults and over 90% of teens now use social media regularly
- The average person spends over 2 hours per day on social media and has 5.5 accounts
- High media usage is linked to shorter attention spans but better ability to multitask
- Advertisers are adjusting techniques to account for shorter attention by using concise messaging
- Media and minds have a cyclical relationship where each shapes the other over time.
Cybersecurity is a growing global issue as more of our lives move online. Cybercrime costs are predicted to rise to $2.1 trillion by 2019 as hackers target personal data. While technology benefits society, it also creates vulnerabilities that criminals exploit on social media sites and major companies like Target, eBay, and Anthem. To address this threat, individuals, corporations, and government must work together to increase cybersecurity through education, policy, and budget increases.
This document discusses the digital divide between those who have access to the internet ("iHaves") and those who do not ("iHave Nots"). Low-income individuals, ethnic minorities, immigrants, and the elderly are most affected. While internet access has become important for education, communication, and opportunities, only 65% of low-income households are connected, compared to 95% of wealthier households. Efforts to bridge the digital divide include increasing public access points and providing digital literacy training to help people take advantage of online resources. The goal is to give marginalized groups more opportunities through access to information, education, and communication online.
Traditional advertising methods like banner ads were becoming ineffective as users saw more ads and clicked on fewer. This led advertisers to experiment with user-generated content to promote their brands more passively. Red Bull in particular created a media company to produce their own engaging content across different platforms. Their Stratos space jump broadcast drew over 8 million YouTube views and widespread attention, demonstrating how desirable advertiser content can connect with consumers when it provides value beyond just promoting products. Now, content marketing is a leading strategy for building brand recognition and conversions compared to traditional targeted ads.
The document discusses the benefits of exercise for mental health. Regular physical activity can help reduce anxiety and depression and improve mood and cognitive functioning. Exercise causes chemical changes in the brain that may help boost feelings of calmness, happiness and focus.
This document discusses the obsession many youth have with gaining "likes" on social media and the negative impacts this can have on mental health and well-being. It notes that teens spend around 9 hours per day consuming media and feel pressure to curate a highlight reel of their lives to portray to others. However, constantly seeking validation from likes has been shown to prevent many from fully experiencing life and can damage self-esteem. The document warns that social media addiction is a growing issue for society.
The MYnstrel Free Press Volume 2: Economic Struggles, Meet Jazzbutest
The document discusses the process of manufacturing celebrity and its negative byproducts. It argues that celebrities are rarely the best in their individual pursuits like singing, dancing, etc. but become famous due to being products of a system controlled by wealthy elites. This system stifles opportunities for worthy artists and creates feudalism. The document also asserts that manufactured celebrities should not be viewed as role models due to behaviors like drug abuse and narcissism that result from the celebrity-making process.
This document discusses the importance of media influences on children and teens. It explains that the media plays a large role in creating social norms and influencing people of all ages through advertisements and television. The media tries to sell certain items to children and teens or influence how they act and look. Now, children and teens are constantly exposed to media influences through various platforms that provide opportunities for connection but also shape attitudes and viewpoints.

quantitative approach, the study's objectives are descriptive and causal, adopting a positivist paradigm with a
deductive approach to theory development and a survey research strategy. Findings reveal that work stress
negatively and significantly impacts employee performance, while digital literacy positively and significantly
affects it. Simultaneously, work stress and digital literacy have a positive and significant influence on employee
performance. It is anticipated that company management will devise workload management strategies to
alleviate work stress and assess the implementation of more efficient digital technology to enhance employee

DO NOT LOSE THEIR ABILITY
TO GENERATE SIGNIFICANT
INCOME EVEN AFTER THEIR
INITIAL “15 MINUTES” ARE
OVER.
BECAUSE OF THIS, THE
INTERNET HAS BECOME A
LEGITIMATE PLATFORM FOR
THOSE IN SEEK OF

USED THE PUBLICITY FROM A
PLANNED SEX TAPE TO TRANSFORM
HERSELF INTO A CELEBRITY ICON THAT

HOWEVER, KIM’S VIRAL IMPACT ALSO
HELPED THE PEOPLE AROUND HER…

EXPLODED IN NOTORIETY AFTER
NUMEROUS “MEMES” SURFACED

12. “REALLY ALL MY
MYSPACE VIEWS
CAME FROM
SOUNDCLICK AND MY
YOUTUBE VIEWS
CAME FROM
MYSPACE; THEY FED
OFF EACH OTHER.” (4)
-SOULJA BOY
13. LIKE SOULJA BOY DID WITH “CRANK THAT”,
MANY VIRAL RAPPERS’ MUSIC IS
ACCOMPANIED BY AN ACTION THAT TAKES
PLACE IN THE MUSIC VIDEO OR IS ALLUDED
TO IN THE LYRICS, SUCH AS A DANCE OR
MOVEMENT. (6)
17. BY INCORPORATING A DANCE OR
MOVEMENT ELEMENT INTO THEIR SONGS,
THESE RAPPERS ARE ABLE TO GAIN LARGE
AMOUNTS OF PUBLICITY FROM ATHLETES
AND CELEBRITIES LIKE LEBRON JAMES OR
HILLARY CLINTON.
18. IN 2015, NIELSEN REPORTED THAT MUSIC
STREAMING SERVICES HAD DOUBLED IN
USAGE AND WERE OVER 300 BILLION
STREAMS PER YEAR. (5)
IN AN INDUSTRY NOW DOMINATED BY
INTERNET STREAMING, THE ABILITY TO BE
RELEVANT ON SOCIAL MEDIA HAS BECOME
AS IMPORTANT THAN EVER.
19. AS DEMONSTRATED EARLIER, THESE RAPPERS
HAVE DISCOVERED AN ABILITY TO MARKET
AND SELL THEIR MUSIC THROUGH THE USE
OF VIRAL MOMENTS ON SOCIAL MEDIA.
