Ang mitolohiya ay isang anyo ng panitikan na
nakapalibot sa relihiyon o tradisyonal na
kultura. Sa mga librong ito, tipo na ang
protagonist o main character ay isang diyos,
diyosa, o anak ng isang diyos. Maraming
elemento tulad ng mahika, nilalang, at
mahiwagang mga lugar.
Ang mitolohiya ay ang mga kuwentong umusbong noong unang
panahon na ang tema’y pananampalataya at pagsasamba sa
mga diyos/diyosang may natatanging kapangyarihang hindi
makikita sa mga normal na tao. Kadalasang mga kuwento nito’y
ukol sa pakikipagsapalaran ng mga diyos, interaksyon nito sa
mga mortal, pananampalataya ng mga mortal, at pag-ibig nito sa
kapwa diyos/diyosa o sa mga mortal.
Ang salitang mito/myth ay galing sa salitang Latin na mythos at
mula sa Greek na muthos, na ang kahulugan ay kuwento. Ang
muthos ay halaw pa sa mu, na ang ibig sabihin ay paglikha ng
tunog sa bibig. Sa Klasikal na Mitolohiya ang mito/myth ay
representasyon ng marubdob na pangarap at takot ng mga
sinaunang tao. Nakatutulong ito upang maunawaan ng mga
sinaunang tao ang misteryo ng pagkakalikha ng mundo, ng tao,
ng mga katangian ng iba pang mga nilalang.
