This document defines and provides examples of 8 types of figurative language: metaphor, idiom, dialect, simile, hyperbole, personification, onomatopoeia, and alliteration. Figurative language uses words or expressions with non-literal meanings to compare unlike things, capture language unique to groups, exaggerate for humor, give human qualities to non-human things, or imitate sounds.
