This document defines and provides examples of various literary devices including alliteration, assonance, hyperbole, idioms, similes, onomatopoeia, and personification. It asks the reader to write one sentence for each term defined.

terms.

3.  Alliteration is the repetition of beginning consonant
sounds in two or more neighboring words or syllables.
 Example : The wild wooly walrus waits and wonders
when we’ll walk by.

4.  The repetition of vowel sounds in words or syllables.
 Fleet feet sweep by sleeping geese.

5.  Big exaggeration, usually with humor.
 Mile high ice-cream cones.

6.  An expression of two or more words that means
something other than the actual meaning of it’s words.
 Hold your horses-I am coming.

7.  Comparing two things that are not alike to suggest that
they actually have something in common.
 Her hair was silk.

8.  A figure of speech comparing two unlike things . Using
the words “like or as.”
 The sun is like a yellow ball of fire in the sky.

9.  Naming a thing or an action by imitating the sound
associated with it.
 Buzz, hiss , roar , woof.

10.  Giving something actual human qualities.
 The stuffed bear smiled as the little boy hugged him
close.

11.  Write one sentence for each term.
