Fhe- me- ni- hine
Feminine is the opposite of masculine. If
it has anything to do with girls and women,
it's considered feminine. Anything feminine
is associated with females. In American
culture, that includes wearing pink, playing
with dolls, sporting high heels, and getting
weepy during sad movies.

MASCULINE
Masculine pertaining to or
characteristic of a man or men:
masculine attire. having qualities
traditionally ascribed to men, as
strength and boldness.

GENDER
Gender refers to the social attributes and
opportunities associated with being female and
male and to the relationships between women and
men and girls and boys, as well as to the relations
between women and those between men. These
attributes, opportunities and relationships are
socially constructed and are learned through
socialization processes.

SEX
Sex refers to the biological and
physiological characteristics that define
humans as female or male. These sets of
biological characteristics are not mutually
exclusive, as there are individuals who
possess both, but these characteristics tend
to differentiate humans as females or males.

FEMINIST
APPROACH
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
a. Define the Feminist approach.
b. Differentiate Feminist approach in other approaches.
c. Demonstrate their judgement using Feminist approach
based on the given selection; and
d. Construct their own critique using Feminist Approach.
Feminist Approach- focuses
on female representation in
literature, paying attention to
female points of view, concerns,
and values.
Contrary to misconceptions that have
surfaced due to people
misunderstanding its name, feminism is
not about believing that women are
superior to men, or desiring to tear down
men, or want in.
It does, however, involve identifying
ways in which women to dominate society
instead of men, equality between the sexes
is not realized, and how this is sometimes
treated as part of the “default” way that
things work.
With this focus in mind, feminist
literary criticism asks the following
questions about a literary work:
• How is the relationship between men
and women portrayed in the text?
• What are the power
relationships present between
men and women (or characters
assuming such roles) in the text?
• How are the roles for males
and females defined?
• What constitutes
masculinity and femininity?
• What does the text’s
reception by the public and
by literary critics reveal
about patriarchy?
• What does the text reveal
about the economic, social,
psychological, and political
workings of patriarchy?
Example of Marxist
Approach
The story of the necklace highlights men's power
with all of the things and they have the control on every
woman's decision. Using feminist theory, it discusses
the relationship between a male who has the power on
everything and a female who only has the right to
manage the events of the home. The author narrates
Matilde Loisel, the protagonist as one of the pretty and
charming girls in the town
Matilde is married to a Clerk and unhappy
with what she has in her life. She confidently
believes that she is a blessed woman with a
beautiful physical appearance that is why she
thoughts that she deserves that thing but all of
the luxuries in the world. on the other hand,
according to the story, she is accomplishment
and not wealthy at all.
In "The Necklace", she was described as a
being in substantial and materialistic, just like
what is in the story, she had no clothes, no
jewels, nothing. And these where the only thing
she loved; she felt that she was made for them",
meaning she is too desperate for wealth. The
lady in the story is under the patriarchal society
where women have lesser right that men.
She portrays the rule of being a woman in the
public for the past hundred years: a housewife
has the patriarchal society where Mathilde grew
affects her attitude and personalities. Because
she is a lady who is in the world where society
focuses in man's power, she has almost no
control in her life.

paragraph that has atleast 5
sentences each, write a Feminist
criticism about “The Story of an
Hour” by Kate Chopin.

  • 6. Feminine is the opposite of masculine. If it has anything to do with girls and women, it's considered feminine. Anything feminine is associated with females. In American culture, that includes wearing pink, playing with dolls, sporting high heels, and getting weepy during sad movies.

  • 8. Masculine pertaining to or characteristic of a man or men: masculine attire. having qualities traditionally ascribed to men, as strength and boldness.

Gender refers to the social attributes and opportunities associated with being female and male and to the relationships between women and men and girls and boys, as well as to the relations between women and those between men. These attributes, opportunities and relationships are socially constructed and are learned through socialization processes.

  • 27. Feminist Approach- focuses on female representation in literature, paying attention to female points of view, concerns, and values.
  • 28. Contrary to misconceptions that have surfaced due to people misunderstanding its name, feminism is not about believing that women are superior to men, or desiring to tear down men, or want in.
  • 29. It does, however, involve identifying ways in which women to dominate society instead of men, equality between the sexes is not realized, and how this is sometimes treated as part of the “default” way that things work.
  • 30. With this focus in mind, feminist literary criticism asks the following questions about a literary work: • How is the relationship between men and women portrayed in the text?
  • 31. • What are the power relationships present between men and women (or characters assuming such roles) in the text?
  • 32. • How are the roles for males and females defined? • What constitutes masculinity and femininity?
  • 33. • What does the text’s reception by the public and by literary critics reveal about patriarchy?
  • 34. • What does the text reveal about the economic, social, psychological, and political workings of patriarchy?
  • 36. The story of the necklace highlights men's power with all of the things and they have the control on every woman's decision. Using feminist theory, it discusses the relationship between a male who has the power on everything and a female who only has the right to manage the events of the home. The author narrates Matilde Loisel, the protagonist as one of the pretty and charming girls in the town
  • 37. Matilde is married to a Clerk and unhappy with what she has in her life. She confidently believes that she is a blessed woman with a beautiful physical appearance that is why she thoughts that she deserves that thing but all of the luxuries in the world. on the other hand, according to the story, she is accomplishment and not wealthy at all.
  • 38. In "The Necklace", she was described as a being in substantial and materialistic, just like what is in the story, she had no clothes, no jewels, nothing. And these where the only thing she loved; she felt that she was made for them", meaning she is too desperate for wealth. The lady in the story is under the patriarchal society where women have lesser right that men.
  • 39. She portrays the rule of being a woman in the public for the past hundred years: a housewife has the patriarchal society where Mathilde grew affects her attitude and personalities. Because she is a lady who is in the world where society focuses in man's power, she has almost no control in her life.
