1. Female Tech CEOs To Watch
Over the last 20 years, women have made great leaps in the business community
by becoming the CEOs of hundreds of powerful companies. While women have
been able to come to power in most business sectors, the tech industry remains one
of the final frontiers. The tech sector is still mostly male dominated, but over the
last 5 years, women have begun to break down the tech barrier and become CEOs
of several powerful tech companies.
Brooke Moreland founded Fashism.com in her early 20s and is currently the
startup’s CEO. Moreland had no technical experience when she launched the
fashion website in 2008. The site now boasts over 50,000 members and has broken
into pop culture and other mediums.
Open Knowledge Commons Executive Director Maura Marx has several degrees,
including an M.A. in Italian. Open Knowledge Commons is a nonprofit
organization that links libraries, technologies and universities together in order to
share knowledge. The organization was founded in 2008 and works to bring
information to the internet so that people may freely view it.
Caren Maio is the cofounder and CEO of Nestio. Nestio is a new company but has
quickly solidified its position atop the real estate market. Nestio is a real estate
search website and company that combines housing searches with social
networking.
AnthroTronix was founded by Corinna E. Lathan, and she also serves as the
company’s CEO. Lathan holds a PhD in Neuroscience from MIT and an MS in
Astronautics. AnthroTronix is an interface technologies research and development
firm and was recognized as one of 2008’s 5000 fastest growing companies.
Lissa Morgenthaler-Jones is the daughter of David Morgenthaler, who is knows as
one of the world’s oldest living venture capitalists. In 2006, Morgenthaler-Jones
launched LiveFuels and is currently the company’s CEO. LiveFuels is a
tech/science company that is attempting to make algae a replacement for fossil
fuels.
Dutch company Layar is ran by CEO and founder Claire Boonstra. Layar was
founded in 2009 and has created a web browser called Layar. The web browser
uses augmented reality technology to allow users to find items.
2. Hayley Barna and Katia Beauchamp are cofounders and Co-CEOs of Birchbox.
The two met at Harvard Business School and came up with the idea for
Birchbox.com. Birchbox.com is a beauty product shop and group website that
allows people to join and receive different beauty product samples.
Former COO of DailyCandy Catherine Levene founded and launched Artspace in
early 2011. Levene is currently Artspace’s CEO. Artspace is an online art seller
and image depository focusing on contemporary works of art.
Leslie Harris is the current President and CEO of the Center for Democracy &
Technology. The Center for Democracy & Technology is a nonprofit public
interest organization that works to keep the internet open and free. Under Harris,
the CDT has greatly expanded and become a force within the “free internet”
culture.
Juliana Rotich is the cofounder and Executive Director of Ushahidi. Rotich comes
from a unique background, being born and spending her early life in Kenya. After
moving to the United States, she majored in IT and founded Ushahidi, a nonprofit
tech company that attempts to bring open source software to the public.
