President Hoover believed in rugged individualism and did not support government intervention in the economy. When he lost re-election to FDR, FDR introduced a New Deal to combat the Depression. FDR established numerous alphabet agencies to provide relief, create jobs, and stimulate the economy. The agencies included the AAA to support farmers, the FERA to aid the homeless, the CWA and WPA to fund public works projects, and the PWA to fund large infrastructure projects to create jobs. These measures helped reduce unemployment but did not fully solve the Depression. World War 2 ultimately boosted employment as the economy geared up for war production.
