• FCT stands for Familiarity, Comfort,
and Trust. We’ve all experienced
how much more we trust someone
when we’re familiar with them, when
we’re comfortable talking with them,
laughing with them, sharing
something important with them. This
is the heart of FCT.
• Logically if we learn to become
Familiar with someone we can get
Comfortable with that someone. If we
are Comfortable we learn to Trust.
What Is FCT

• The Diversity Wheel defines who
we are as individuals among
several dimensions.
• Each of us can identify ourselves
through these dimensions.
• The dimensions identify the
areas where we are different, but
more importantly they help us
identify where we are similar.
• The Dimensions of the Diversity
Wheel help us identify common
ground, where we may become
familiar.
Break it Down – The Diversity Wheel

• For our purposes Familiarity is
the state of being familiar;
friendly relationships; close
acquaintance; intimacy.
• When we consider the Diversity
Wheel we can readily see that
sometimes dimensions of
diversity can prevent us from
being familiar. We may simply
not know, and if we don’t know,
we may be uncomfortable, or
even afraid.
Break it Down – What is Familiarity?

• Comfort is a state of ease and
satisfaction, a condition of well-
being, contentment, and security.
• Through the Diversity Wheel we
can see areas where we may
find common ground, interests,
concerns, needs.
• By talking and learning about
people who are different we
become more familiar. This
allows us to become
Comfortable.

• Trust is the reliance on the integrity,
strength, ability, surety, of a person or
thing; confidence; a person on whom
one relies.
• For us in the workplace arriving at
Trust makes us better associates,
better collaborators, better team
members, which allows us to be better
at our jobs.
• We build Trust through FCT. If I know
you, if I understand you, if we have
some common ground I am comforted
in who you are, and what you do, and I
can build trust between us because we
now know each other.
Break it Down – What is Trust?

• As people we tend to stay where it’s
comfortable. We like what we like, and
stick to what we know. Doing anything
different is uncomfortable. It takes work.
• Consider the Diversity Wheel. Getting to
know someone who identifies with
different dimensions or something
different in one dimension presents us
with a challenge. To try to get to know
that person might make one
uncomfortable.
• The challenge asks that we LEAN INTO
DISCOMFORT. That’s where the magic
happens. Make a concerted decision to
get to know someone different. That is
the only way to build FCT.
How Can We Get There?
Leaning Into Discomfort
This document is the property of DS Brown. It shall not be duplicated or used in whole or in part without the written permission of DS Brown.
• FCT helps us break down
barriers and work better together.
• In order to get there we have to
Lean Into Discomfort and
traverse the various Diversity
Dimensions. We have to get to
know each other.
• This may be a fearful thing, but
as the picture says, once we
bypass fear, we arrive at trust.
• And that is a state of comfort.
The Road To Trust

• Trust gets us …
– Commitment
– Sincerity
– Reliability
– Integrity
– Competence
– Consistency
What Does Trust Get Us?
• Alice – VP for Operations Store Applications (White Female)
• Jean – Director for Operations Store Applications (Black Female) – Reports to Alice
• Denise – Manager of Development in Store Operations ( White Female)
•
•
• Scenario-
• Alice and Jean were sitting in Alice office discussing some business updates from the weekend - Jean at the table,
Alice behind her desk
• Denise walks in , ask Alice can she has a quick questions
• Alice says yes. Denise sits at the desk across from Alice and begins to have a conversation with Alice about a
project being kicked off by the development team that will impact operations and support of the new tool.
• The issue Denise is presenting to Alice was about how she did not allocate resources for operations from a
budgeting perspective and wanted to know if Alice felt this is something that needed to be addressed or since the
enhancement was minor could Support continue to manage
• Alice answered the question – Yes Denise Team will take it .
•
• Discussion Points:
• Do you think Denise and Jean have FCT ? Why did you answer the way you did.
• What should Denise have done differently in this scenario?
• How to you think Jean felt after this conversation ?
• Did Alice Practice the concept Let Go and Be courageous ?
• Do you understand the importance FCT is in the WorkPlace?
