There are three main types of faults: normal faults where one side of the fault moves up and the other remains the same, reverse faults where one side moves down and the other stays put, and strike-slip faults where both sides of the fault slide horizontally past one another. Faults are breaks or fractures in the ground that can cause earthquakes and contribute to mountain building.
