Forces inside the Earth put stress on rocks, causing faults where rocks bend and break along surfaces. There are three main types of faults: normal faults where tension pulls rocks apart, reverse faults where rocks are forced up over other rocks, and strike-slip faults where rocks slide past each other horizontally. Earthquakes occur when built-up stress causes rocks along faults to break and release vibrations at the surface.
