This document discusses the spiritual discipline of fasting and its benefits. It notes that fasting requires self-discipline and denial of natural appetites in order to focus on God. Fasting is often linked with prayer in scripture and can make prayers more powerful. When fasting, one should do so quietly and not draw attention to themselves, as fasting is about seeking God not impressing others. The document outlines various reasons Christians throughout history have fasted, including spiritual maintenance, seeking God's help in difficult times, protection from danger, and empowerment for ministry assignments.

This document discusses the power of prayer and fasting. It defines fasting as abstaining from food or drink in order to seek God more intensely. Fasting is described in the Bible as being used in times of war, sickness, grief, and for forgiveness and wisdom. Jesus fasted for 40 days before his ministry and taught his followers to fast. The document calls Christians to pray and fast for protection amid dangerous times, for promotion to fulfill their destiny, and for revival in the church and nation. Fasting intensifies hunger for God, increases intimacy with him, and cleanses spiritual blockages.
This is a sermon slide series giving a short biblical overview on fasting. Fasting is one of the most common and powerful spiritual disciplines in the entire Bible. My experience & God's word have convinced me that if you want to get serious about prayer needs, fasting is like throwing gasoline on the fire of your prayers.
This document discusses fasting as a spiritual discipline. It begins by stating the objectives of learning about the benefits of fasting, clearing misconceptions, and considering including fasting. It then discusses why people don't fast, defining fasting as turning physical hunger toward spiritual hunger for God. The document notes fasting is God-appointed based on examples in the Old Testament, Jesus fasting, and Jesus and the early church teaching on fasting. It explains fasting helps humble ourselves by surfacing other dependencies and revealing lack of discipline and weak spiritual hunger. Finally, it provides suggestions for practicing fasting and wrong reasons to fast.
This document provides a spiritual checkup to evaluate spiritual health. It uses medical tools as metaphors for aspects of spiritual health - the heart, blood, temperature, sensitivity, and vision. For each, it poses reflective questions. It then prescribes daily spiritual practices for good health: Bible study, prayer, worship/fellowship, and rest. Regular spiritual exercise through these disciplines nourishes and strengthens one's relationship with God.
This document provides guidance on prayer based on scripture. It emphasizes the importance of prayer and discusses different aspects of an effective prayer life. It recommends devoting yourself to prayer, being watchful and thankful in prayer. Specific tips include praying often, with focus and persistence, being alert for God's answers, and cultivating an attitude of gratitude. The purpose of prayer is to seek God's will, not our own. Overall, the document stresses developing a committed prayer life that transforms lives and expands God's kingdom.
This document discusses what it takes to grow spiritually and become a disciple of Christ. It defines spiritual maturity as being like Christ and outlines several core habits that are necessary for growth, including reading the Bible, prayer, fellowship, service, and stewardship. The document emphasizes that spiritual growth is a process that requires discipline and training oneself, not just the passage of time. Becoming a disciple means daily carrying one's cross by adopting spiritual disciplines. The ultimate purpose of growing as a disciple is to walk in God's love and experience his presence.
Fasting is abstaining from food, drink, and other things for spiritual purposes. It is mentioned frequently in scripture and practiced by prophets and early Christians. Fasting is prescribed in Islam during the month of Ramadan as a means of spiritual purification, gaining forgiveness, and strengthening one's relationship with God. In addition to spiritual benefits, fasting can provide physical health benefits like rest for the digestive system and potential treatment of diseases.

This document provides guidance on fasting from three Christian sources. It discusses what fasting is, reasons to fast, and tips for safely fasting. Pastor Rick Warren's section defines fasting as voluntarily not eating and explains that fasting allows more time for prayer, demonstrates desire in prayer, and releases God's power. Dr. Bill Bright emphasizes preparing spiritually for fasting and maintaining health. Pastor Lance Witt notes fasting is assumed in the Bible and can be misused but is meant to draw people closer to God.
The document discusses fasting as an important yet often neglected spiritual tool. It defines fasting as abstaining from food and drink while spending extra time in prayer and Bible study. Fasting helps build a close relationship with God, maintain spiritual focus, and can be used to seek God's help in prayer for specific needs. The Bible provides many examples of people who fasted, and Jesus expected his followers to fast.

What does Yeshua have to teach me about prayerRichard Harvey
Jesus taught about the importance of prayer through both his words and actions. He believed in regularly praying alone and with others, often giving thanks. He prayed before important decisions and for his disciples. The document discusses how Jesus continues to pray for us and help us pray. It also provides guidance on praying for God's will to be done, forgiveness, and not giving up on prayer even during difficult times.
The document encourages Christians to look to Jesus in everything. It says we should look to Jesus in times of trial and triumph, for mercy and help every step of the way. We should depend on Jesus to supply all our needs and trust our whole life in God's hands. To be victorious, we must look to Jesus with everything - our time, talents, and treasures. When suffering, we must continue looking to Jesus and seeking God's purpose with faith and patience.
The document discusses fighting the good fight of faith. It provides insights into understanding who believers are in Christ and how to act on God's word in faith. The main points are:
1) The only fight Christians are called to is the good fight of faith, and there is a right way to fight it through understanding our identity and place in Christ.
2) Believers must hear God's word to build faith and act on it through love to see results.
3) Exercising authority in love and putting on the full armor of God enables believers to withstand spiritual battles and bring glory to God.
4) The goal is to make disciples, bring glory to God, and finish the
The document discusses the principles of anointing according to the Bible. It provides several key points about anointing: (1) Anointing demands holiness of heart and righteousness of life, devotion to God's word, and absolute obedience to the Holy Spirit. (2) In the New Testament, the most common Greek word for anointing is "Christ," referring to Jesus as the anointed one. (3) All Christians are anointed with the Holy Spirit, and this anointing helps believers not be misled by false prophets or teachings about Christ.
Some notes from recent teaching sessions - they are aimed at giving more of a background / preparatory idea about how a person might move into a position to be "anointed" by God.

The document provides guidance on fasting and prayer. It recommends setting objectives for the fast, making a commitment, preparing spiritually by repenting of sins, and preparing physically. While fasting, one should spend time daily in prayer, Bible study, and restricting activities. To end the fast, one should do so gradually by reintroducing foods slowly. The document expects that fasting and prayer will strengthen one's faith and bring spiritual renewal when done sincerely with repentance and seeking God.
We must take heed to what we have learned in the past (Heb. 2:1). There is a danger in drifting away from the truth (Heb. 2:2, 3). Therefore, we must be reminded of the things we already know (1 Cor. 4:17).
One thing we need to remind ourselves, and teach to our neighbors, is the basic truth about New Testament Christianity. There is a lot of false teaching out there and people have the wrong concept (Matt. 7:15-20). It is our duty to expose it and teach them the truth (Eph. 5:11).
This lesson will notice that New Testament Christians: (1) Believed in Christ; (2) Submitted to the plan of salvation; (3) Were just Christians; (4) Were not part of any denominations.
The document discusses guidance and discerning God's call through the story of Jesus walking on water. It provides commentary on key aspects of the story, noting that (1) faith asks God's will through prayer; (2) seeks God's will, not our own agenda; and (3) waits on God's answer rather than acting prematurely. It emphasizes that the goal of faith is coming to Christ, not miracles or personal fulfillment. The document also discusses how God has a plan for our lives and guides our decisions through circumstances and Scripture, helping us even when we cannot see beyond the next step. This is illustrated through a story about a man pushing against a large rock at God's command.
Every time we overcome an obstacle, a bad habit, an addiction, we please God. He is committed to be with you every time you pass through the waters and through fire…GOD WANTS YOU TO GROW UP
This document discusses growing like Jesus in four areas: wisdom, physical development, spiritual growth, and social relationships. It provides biblical references to support how Jesus grew in each of these areas and encourages growing like Him. For wisdom, it notes Jesus' wisdom came from God and provides ways we can obtain God's wisdom. For physical development, it encourages depending on God and taking care of our bodies. For spiritual growth, it lists responsibilities like prayer, humility, and following God's word. Finally, it discusses Jesus' social relationships with his family, disciples, sinners and others.
Types of prayer part four, ministering prayer (1)Bill Faris
This document discusses different types of prayer that involve praying with others present ("prayer out") rather than just praying to God alone ("prayer up"). It defines ministering prayer as prayer that brings together oneself, God, and another person to concentrate on benefiting that other person. The objective of ministering prayer is to join where God is already at work in healing and blessing others. Some examples of ministering prayer mentioned are declarative prayer, listening prayer using spiritual gifts, guided imagery prayer, and prayers of blessing. Skills like discernment, listening, sensitivity, patience, and believing in one's role as a healing agent are important for ministering prayer.
1) The document is a prayer request letter from Well Fortified Intercessors Army dated January 12, 2012.
2) It provides over 50 prayer requests for people suffering from various illnesses and hardships.

This document discusses the complex relationship between athletes and the media. It notes that athletes sign away some of their privacy rights when they enter contracts, and the media sometimes attacks them without full context or verification. Reporters are obligated to get comments from athletes but have significant leeway in how they pursue stories. The document raises questions about whether reporters should have limits, if unverified information should be published, and how media portrayals impact communities. Researching this issue requires considering both the athletes' and media's perspectives without bias.

The word of god as a foundation for church growthElvis Amenyitor
1. The early church faced a problem of neglecting widows in daily food distribution. The Twelve appointed seven men to oversee this ministry so they could focus on prayer and preaching.
2. As a result of this change, the word of God spread rapidly and the number of disciples and priests following Christ greatly increased.
3. Building the church requires using the spiritual gifts God has given each believer. Members should discover their gifts, serve others' needs, and use their gifts faithfully and prayerfully for God's glory. Working together in this way expands God's kingdom.

The document discusses holiness as one of the pastoral priorities for the new millennium according to Novo Millennio Ineunte. It defines holiness as the high standard of ordinary Christian living, the perfection of charity, and doing the will of God. The document argues that holiness is for all Christians, not just a few, and can be achieved through everyday actions and avoiding sin. It provides biblical support for the call to holiness and explains that the Catholic Church is holy because it was founded by Jesus Christ and has the means to make people holy through the sacraments and other spiritual practices.
The First Southern Baptist Church of North Hollywood is planning a four-Sunday "April Mini-Revival" from April 8-29. Paul maintained an ongoing life of prayer despite his active ministry as an apostle. The document suggests Paul's example challenges Christians to find ways to continually pray throughout each day while engaged in various activities, such as periodically acknowledging God's presence with brief prayers of different types.
The document discusses important criteria for choosing a church to attend regularly. It lists two "must haves" - that the church faithfully teaches God's word and upholds sound doctrine. Several other desirable qualities are also mentioned, such as preference for a church where the priorities are biblical truths rather than personal preferences. The rest of the document provides biblical support for focusing on scriptural teaching and doctrine when selecting a church.
Whatever Happened to the Prayer MeetingPeter Hammond
The document discusses the decline of the prayer meeting in many Western churches. It notes that prayer meetings were once a central part of church life but are now rarely held or attract few members. The author argues this decline is due to churches prioritizing other activities like music and television over prayer and evangelism. The author advocates for restoring prayer as a regular practice, citing numerous Bible passages about the importance and power of prayer.

1) There was a complaint between Greek and Hebrew widows not receiving equal food distribution. The 12 disciples gathered all believers to address this issue and divisions in ministries.
2) They proposed choosing 7 faithful men to oversee food distribution so the 12 could focus on ministry and prayer. Stephen and Philip were among those chosen and did great works.
3) As a result, the word of God spread and the number of disciples in Jerusalem rapidly increased, including many priests who became believers. Strengthening the church system helped spread the gospel more effectively.
1) Paul expresses his joy and thankfulness for the Philippians in remembering their participation in spreading the gospel from the beginning of their faith.
2) He finds joy in interceding for them through prayer, focusing on their welfare rather than his own difficulties.
3) Paul is grateful for the Philippians' enduring partnership with him in the gospel mission through their generous financial support of his ministry.
This document provides an overview of fasting from a Christian perspective. It discusses the primary purposes of fasting according to the Bible as self-humbling and invoking the supernatural. It provides examples of fasting in the Old Testament including examples from Ezra, Jehoshaphat, and the Day of Atonement. It also discusses examples of fasting in the life of Jesus and in the early Christian church. The overall message is that fasting was a regular spiritual practice in the Bible that has been neglected by modern Christians but can provide spiritual benefits when done properly.
This document outlines a module for welcoming refugees based on biblical passages. It includes an introduction, guiding questions, bible passages, bible studies, and closing prayers. The bible studies focus on themes of all people being created in God's image, God and his people seeking refuge, and God's people providing refuge for others. It encourages welcoming refugees with compassion as Jesus welcomed all people. The document provides resources to help facilitate discussions and activities to help participants understand the refugee experience.
The document outlines steps believers must take to prepare for Christ's return, which is described as imminent. It states that we must (1) grow spiritually through regular prayer, Bible study, and obedience; (2) strengthen relationships with other believers for accountability and community; and (3) continually share the gospel with non-believers through acts of service and compassion. Preparing also requires depending on the Holy Spirit's power, and getting one's personal life, family, and finances in order. The conclusion urges urgency, saying Christ's coming will happen very quickly with no time left for reflection once it arrives.

1. Fasting, Holy Spirit
Fasting Benefits
December 17, 2012 Philip Noordmans 6 Comments
Fasting is not easy; rather, it requires great self-discipline, self-control,
and self-denial to temporarily say ‘No‘ to our natural appetites in order to say
‘Yes‘ to God. The Puritans called fasting a ‘soul-fattening‘ exercise. Fasting
runs counter to our self-indulgent, ‘me, my, mine, now!‘ mindset, and thus it is
not surprising that many Christians have not given serious consideration to the
spiritual discipline of fasting. During a recent lunch conversation with a
pastor, he pointed to his rotund middle and said, ‘I hate fasting ‘ but I know
that Jesus said we need to do it.‘ ‘As Martin Luther, an inveterate [seasoned]
faster, quaintly expressed it, ‘the flesh was wont to grumble dreadfully‘‘.[i]

fastingIn both the Old Testament and the New, fasting and prayer often go hand-
in-hand (Jer. 14:11-12; Neh. 1:4; Ezra 8:21,23; Mt. 6:5-18). Andrew Murray
observed that ‘Prayer is the one hand with which we grasp the invisible;
fasting, the other with which we let loose and cast away the visible.‘[ii]
Fasting clothes the prayers of the righteous in the cloak of persuasiveness.

God‘s Chosen Fast, Arthur Wallis writes, ‘Fasting is designed to make prayer
mount up as on eagles‘ wings. It is intended to usher the suppliant into the
audience chamber of the King. ‘ It is calculated to give an edge to a man‘s
intercessions and power to his petitions. Heaven is ready to bend its ear to
listen when someone prays with fasting.‘[iii]
‘In Scripture people can pray without fasting, but they cannot fast without
praying. Fasting and prayer are always linked together.‘ John MacArthur
‘The man who prays with fasting is giving heaven notice that he is in earnest.‘

Prayer + Faith + Righteous Lifestyle (Obedience) [See Isaiah 58]

When You Fast ‘
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus began His teaching on fasting by saying, ‘When
you fast ‘‘ (Mt. 6:16, ESV). Not ‘If you fast‘, but ‘when‘, implying that
Jesus expected ‘ and expects ‘ His followers to fast.[iv]
When you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their
faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have
received their reward. 17 But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your
face, 18 that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is
in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. Mt. 6:16-18,
ESV
Bishop J.C. Ryle underscored Jesus‘ words when he wrote, ‘One thing must never
be forgotten: those who fast should do it quietly, secretly and without
ostentation [showiness].‘[v] We do not fast for men but for God who sees what
we do in secret.
2. Marcus Yoars observes, ‘The good news is that countless believers are
rediscovering the power of fasting and, as a result, it‘s discussed more these
days. The bad news is that it‘s still a missing element of most American
Christians‘ lives. Until we as a church realize fasting isn‘t a matter of if but
when, we will continue to lose spiritual ground.‘ (Marcus Yoars. 10
Revolutions for the New Year. Charisma Magazine, January 2013, Page 6.)
Motives for Fasting
holy spirit, fasting, prayer and fasting, benefits of fasting, intermittent
fasting, juice fast, christian fasting, daniel fast, daniel fastingFasting is
not like a spiritual ‘hunger strike‘ because by fasting we do not and cannot
compel or obligate God to act on our behalf. God remains sovereign and
independent. Hence, we fast to seek God, not to manipulate God.
One result of fasting is this: not only do we become more sensitive to God‘s
will [His desires, His plans]; we also become more willing to do it.
Generally, when our physical hungers are satisfied (or over-indulged), our
spiritual hungers wane (diminish). However, when our physical hungers are held
in-check and we turn to God through Scripture reading and prayer, our spiritual
hungers grow stronger.
Reasons for Fasting
In Scripture and throughout church history people have fasted for a variety of
reasons including the following:
1. As routine spiritual maintenance
One reason we fast is to keep our relationships with God fresh and growing.

The Fasting Edge
by Jentezen Franklin
Based on his study of Scripture combined with extensive experience with fasting,
Jentezen Franklin boils down the benefit of fasting to this: ‘Fasting and prayer
bring you closer to God.‘[vi]
In the same article Franklin observes, ‘So many people have lost the edge in
their lives; they‘ve lost their homes, their marriages, their commitment to the
Lord. We stand in church and sing the songs and lift our hands, but there is no
edge to our worship. There is no edge to the preaching. It all has become just
dull routine and ritual. Fasting can change all that.‘ See also his book, The
Fasting Edge (Charisma House).
2. To beseech God for help in and through a pressing time of need
- a long journey; a difficult conversation; a confrontation; a test; an
interview; a pivotal decision; a disintegrating marriage; an employment crisis;
a health issue
Once again I quote from The Chosen Fast:
holy spirit, fasting, prayer and fasting, benefits of fasting, intermittent
fasting, juice fast, christian fasting, daniel fast, daniel fastingWe face
situations that call for divine wisdom and understanding. Pastor Hsi was faced
with a serious crisis in the early days of the opium refuge work when the supply
of foreign medicines failed. These were vital for the treatment of the patients.
In this desperate situation the thought came to him that maybe God would use his
knowledge of native drugs to compound a medicine to take the place of the
foreign supply. He sought the Lord with prayer and fasting to show him the
proper ingredients. Mrs. Howard Taylor then records the sequel:
Very simply it all came to him just how those pills were to be made. The drugs
3. were at hand in his store, and, still fasting, he took the prescription,
compounded the medicine, and hastened back to the Refuge. It proved an entire
success and entirely changed the aspect of opium refuge work. Willis, 59-60
3. To be kept safe during approaching danger
Jehoshaphat provides a good example for us to follow.
After this the Moabites and Ammonites, and with them some of the Meunites, came
against Jehoshaphat for battle. 2 Some men came and told Jehoshaphat, “A great
multitude is coming against you from Edom, from beyond the sea; and, behold,
they are in Hazazon-tamar“ (that is, Engedi). 3 Then Jehoshaphat was afraid and
set his face to seek the Lord, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. 4 And
Judah assembled to seek help from the Lord; from all the cities of Judah they
came to seek the Lord. 2 Chron. 20:1-4, ESV
4. To be equipped for a bigger-than-normal ministry assignment

13Now there were in the church at Antioch prophets and teachers, Barnabas,
Simeon “, Lucius “, Manaen “, and Saul. 2 While they were worshiping the Lord
and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the
work to which I have called them.“ 3 Then after fasting and praying they laid
their hands on them and sent them off. Acts 13:1-3, ESV
5. To add earnestness to sincere repentance; to demonstrate a true sorrow for
sin

Now on the twenty-fourth day of this month the people of Israel were assembled
with fasting and in sackcloth, and with earth on their heads. 2 And the
Israelites separated themselves from all foreigners and stood and confessed
their sins and the iniquities of their fathers. 3 And they stood up in their
place and read from the Book of the Law of the Lord their God for a quarter of
the day; for another quarter of it they made confession and worshiped the Lord
their God. Neh. 9:1-3, ESV
John Wesley called for a time of fasting “To express our sorrow and shame for
our manifold transgressions of His holy law.“[vii]
6. To break an addiction or stronghold
7. To humble oneself before God
Phillips Brooks (1835-1893) wrote, “This, then, is the philosophy of fasting. It
expresses repentance, and it uncovers the life to God. “Come down, my pride;
stand back my passions; for I am wicked, and I wait for God to bless me.““[viii]
8. To deal with a national emergency
In the 1750s, the leaders of Great Britian called the nation to a day of solemn
fasting and prayer in view of a threatened invasion by the French. On Friday,
February 6, 1756, Wesley recorded in his journal:
holy spirit, fasting, prayer and fasting, benefits of fasting, intermittent
fasting, juice fast, christian fasting, daniel fast, daniel fastingThe fast day
was a glorious day, such as London has scare seen since the restoration. Every
church in the city was more than full, and a solemn seriousness sat on every
face. Surely God heareth prayer, and there will yet be a lengthening of our
tranquility.
A footnote informs us:
Humility was turned into national rejoicing for the threatened invasion by the

9. To be empowered to deliver people who are demonized
According to Jesus some evil spirit cannot be driven out except by fasting and
prayer.
And he said to them, “This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer“
[Some manuscripts add “and fasting“]. Mk. 9:29, ESV. See also Willis, 53-56
Corporate Fasts “ Examples of
Although the primary emphasis of this post is on fasting as an individual,
Scripture also gives examples of corporate fasts. See, for example, 2 Chron.
20:3 and Ezra 8:21-23. Reflect on these verses in their context and note who
calls the group to fast? Why? What happens during the fast (actions of the
leader and the people)? What is the outcome?
How to Fast
1. Prayerfully decide what you will say “No“ to, and for how long.
Some options include these:
Say “No“ to one meal per week for one month.
Drink water but say “No“ to food for 24 hours.
For three days drink water and juice and eat fruit only.
Say “No“ to television for one week and limit internet usage to business
essentials.
Say “No“ to dessert for one week.
Other “
Note: Be wise about your personal health issues. Some people are unable to
fast from food. Others will need to consult their physician before proceeding.
2. Prayerfully decide what you will say “Yes“ to.
Fasting provides a time for deeper spiritual self-examination and re-
orientation. It frees up time that would otherwise be spent cooking, serving,
cleaning-up and/or reading the newspaper or watching television for fellowship
with God. Fasting is giving up the physical in order to heighten the spiritual.
Here“s a good place to start:
holy spirit, natures beauty, quiet place, spiritual refreshment, know Godholy
spirit, personal bible study, meditation on the Word, your word is a lamp to my
feetSay “Yes“ to a block of time (30 minutes; 45; 60; or more) during which you
read Scripture (chapters in both the Old and the New Testaments); pray; journal;
sit quietly in Jesus“ presence; walk in Jesus“ presence conversing with Him;
listen to worship music “
More thoughts on Fasting
To fast is to hunger for God.
“One of the main purposes of fasting is to wean us from our dependence upon
God“s gifts and enable us to become dependent upon God alone.“ Robert
Mulholland
“Fasting reveals our excessive attachments and the assumptions that lie behind
them.“ Marjorie Thompson
“Fasting, then, is a divine corrective to the pride of the human heart.“ Arthur
Wallis
5. “Fasting is saying “No“ to self in order to say “Yes“ to God.“ PJN
“Fasting empties a space within us for God to pour in His love, His power, and
His perspective.“ PJN
Testimonies Regarding Fasting
Norman Grubb penned an account of Rees Howells“ initial experience with fasting.
In his biography of Rees Howells “ Norman Grubb records how God first dealt with
His servant along this line:
It was at a time when he had a great burden for a certain convention, which was
being disrupted by assaults of the enemy. The Lord called him to a day of prayer
and fasting which was something new to him. Used, as he was, to a comfortable
home and four good meals a day, it came as a shock to realize that it meant no
dinner, and he was agitating about it. And would it only happen once? Sup“
posing God asked him to do it every day!
holy spirit, intercession, prayer warrior, holy spirit empowers, fasting
Rees Howells
1879-1950
When midday came he was on his knees in his bedroom, but there was no prayer
that next hour. “I didn“t know such a lust was in me“, he said afterwards. “My
agitation was the proof of the grip it had on me. If the thing had no power over
me, why did I argue about it?“
At one o“clock his mother called him, and he told her he wasn“t taking lunch.
But she called again, as a mother would, and urged, “It won“t take you long to
have it.“ The goodly aroma from downstairs was too much for him, and down he
came. But after the meal, when he returned to his room, he couldn“t get back
into the presence of God. He came face to face with disobedience to the Holy
Ghost.
“I felt I was like the man in the Garden of Eden. I went up the mountain and
walked miles, cursing that old man within me“. “. He didn“t take dinner for many
days after that, but spent the hour with God. As he said later, “The moment I
got victory in it, it wasn“t a very big thing to do. “ It is while you still
want a thing that you can“t get your mind off it. When you have risen above it,
He may give it back to you; but then you are out of it. Willis, 66-67
Personally, after years of practicing the spiritual discipline of fasting I
still do not look forward to it. My will and my flesh protest. Generally I
find that spiritual benefits do not come to me on the day I fast. Rather, God“s
promised rewards (see Mt. 6:18) come in little and surprising ways in the days
that follow. For example, I have experienced keener insights into God“s Word;
a release of humor; wisdom to see solutions to knotty problems; a deep peace;
breakthroughs in the lives of the people for whom I am praying; and more.
Barbara Gordon tells about her first time fasting. She fasted one day a week
for 9 weeks during which time she was lead to pray for 9 individuals that had
requested prayer. At the end she said,
“God moved in many ways during that time. While most of the answers didn“t
appear during the 9 weeks, God increased my faith that they would come.
Within a year of that first fast, my lost friend came to Christ. Another
friend was delivered from a long standing addiction.
A couple whose marriage seemed doomed is still married several years later.
My unmarried friend is still single, but I see her enjoying new peace.
I learned that fasting is not a guarantee that every request will be answered.
6. It is, however, a way to prepare ourselves to pray more in line with God“s will.
The most important personal result of my first fast was that I felt more in love
with my Savior. Circumstances were indeed changed, but more importantly, I was
changed.[ix]
