5. Around the Farm
soil soil soil
Productive gardening starts and ends
with good soil and despire the fact that we
have rich volcanic soils here the copious rains
mean we need to raise beds and contain -
and improve what we have.
Free-range
The poultry roam - and improve their
already healthy farm made diets by
fossicking - scratching for worms and bugs
and grasses. This helps to keep them fit and
make their eggs more healthy
Intercropping
Mixing crops and growing āpatchesā of
food is a way of improving variety and the
health of the eco system. Rotating what we
grow around prermanent crops is also a way
to improve soils and production.
6. Innovating with nature
Black Soldier Fly (BSF)
breeding not only helps feed
the animals - it manages
green-waste efficiently and
reduces greenhouse gases.
Whats the deal with BSF?
BSF has a fast life cycle. The fly produces a lavae
which in turn becomes a 30+% protein source for the
fish and poultry. This animal feed is of course
supplimented with grains and greens from the farm.
What we are doing here is mitigating the largest cost
factor in feeding the animals - we do not buy in food at
al. Buying commercial food usualy costs the farmer up
to 80% of the cost of raising the animals in the first
place. But there is more. BSF are eļ¬cient consumers of
green waste and accordingly they help manage green
waste in quantity. So much so that we need to bring in
green waste from local markets and shops in order to
have enough for them to consume. This reduces the
amount of green waste in landfills, in rivers and water
ways or being burned. It reduced carbon dioxide in the
atmosphere by 1.9 KG for every KG of green wate! But
there is more still! The left over, dry, fluļ¬y and sweet
smelling compound that the BSF have eaten through
makes great compost. So we have a system with several
outputs and as we grow we collect more green waste
and produce more BSF and therefore we can have
more poultry and fish. This is sustainable living!

A Sundanese Village in West Java
Why here people ask? After much searching this was a good
option geographically - not far from an international hub -
close enough and far enough from the capital - good altitude -
good water - combination of soil and climate works for us - and
ultimately it is a uniue experience learning and living alongside
a very diļ¬erent culture from what we all are used to.

Growth - learning
We are at the cusp of great change in education
with emerging technologies. The rise has
potential benefits to lift learning and enhance
capacity, interest and abilities. It also has
potential to miss out on some of beneficial
learning approaches values and emphasis it is
replacing. New technology brings new
pedagogy. And while change is inevitable
and necessary and often helpful, we need to
be discerning about what we adopt so we
can keep some of the value that has been
established.
Integrated Learning
Keeping abreast with technology for
education we aim not to wholesale adopt
what is being offered. Questions asked include:
How do we embrace new technologies to
enhance learning without signing away the
autonomy and value of student centred
learning? And how do we emphasise aspects of
learning that have been overlooked and are so
necessary in the present age. We speak of
hands, head, heart learning in nature, promoting
creativity, critical thinking and analysis skills. We
want to embrace new technologies to assist
with this but not the new technologies that
dictate what we learn.
Support technologies include: Apps to help
identify plants, programs to help collate data,
multi modal tools to help reading and
researching from different perspectives,
platforms that improve access to support
knowledge like dictionaries and data bases. But
we want to maintain the focus on learning what
matters naturally.

9. Good Food
Strange to think that until relatively
recently, there was little in the way of
processed foods and not much pesticide,
herbicide or other enhancing chemicals or
processed aļ¬ecting foods.There was a
considerable range of naturally grown
foods and broader seed stock.
Itās like we have forgotten in around
two generations that we are what we eat,
and the long and short term benefits of
natural foods are countless.
Here at the farm, we are trying to
recapture what is becoming lost knowledge
and resources. So we are trying seed saving
- and using what we grow to make a wide
range of delectable and exciting foods,
drinks and snacks.
10. Grow
Organic takes time to
establish - remaking a
healthy eco system &
finding balance
Organic life
Organic life on the farm is a great idea, but it is not just a
click of the fingers! It is inconvenient, hard work and a long
term investment. It takes time and patience and a lot of trial
and error, correcting and attemptingā¦ So why bother? After
all, we live in an age where quality is no longer the focus, right?
Just push a button, and it's there, no scrutiny!
Yes but, yes but, yes butā¦
Yes, but we are what we eat (what we eat makes us what we
are)
Yes, but we want to know where our food comes from
Yes, but we want our food to be varied and taste great
Yes, but we don't enjoy food that has been exposed to
pesticide chemicals, herbicide chemicals, genetic modification
to seed stock, engineering, artificial enhancement. We want
real, old fashion food that has all the minerals and nutrients
and rich health. So we are prepared to do the hard work to get
there.
There are two main reasons. The first reason is ethical: a
battle against giant industries who have turned agriculture into
mass production at the expense of quality and who use
synthetic chemicals and lab modifications to speed up their
processes, creating a monopoly of nature by patenting seeds
and controlling the market.
The second reason is health and taste. We want food that
tastes great and is healthy for us.That mature Tuscan kale in
the blender with the morning harvest of blackberries, raisins
and purified rainwater will be great and taste great in the
morning smoothy. That cake made with blue pea flower and
rosella pods tastes fantastic and is medicinally beneficial and
generally healthy. The juices, mains, desserts and condiments
we make, and the teas and herbal solutions are all organic,
clean and strong tasting. This is the result of organic gardening
from seed to plate.

Sustainable Living
Sustainable living is best described as an
adapted lifestyle. There are some habits we try
to discard and some we try to adopt. We
discard assuming other people will look after our
trash for example, so we adopt an approach to
managing trash ourselves. This is one example
of many possible āshiftsā we make for a
practical, sustainable lifestyle.
It starts with what we buy and which
products we choose based on researching
and understanding the sustainable value
chain around each thing. What is it made
from? How was it produced, packaged,
transported? Can we get it locally, more
economically, second hand? This sounds
crazy at first but with a bit f focus and
practice it is like anything else and soon you
donāt even notice you are discriminating and
choosing more carefully.
Sorting it all out.
Apart from product selection there is the the
whole practice of waste management. We live in
a place where there is no centrally organised
waste management and this can be a real
challenge. Maybe where you live it is not like that
and you can just put out the trash! We know
what that is like because for many years that is
what we did living in a big city. But even then we
started to become aware of a few things. 1) We
could use waste for something good. 2) we
could sort waste with little effort and make a big
difference.
