[1] The document summarizes a student's 6-month internship experience at the Ondo State UNICEF Assisted Water and Sanitation Project (WATSAN) in Nigeria.
[2] As part of the internship, the student conducted geophysical surveys including two vertical electrical soundings to locate groundwater and recommend borehole drilling locations, specifically recommending a 36m depth for one location.
[3] In conclusion, the student found the internship beneficial for applying academic knowledge to practical work and gaining exposure to industrial activities, but notes the lack of employment opportunities in Nigeria upon graduation. The student recommends assisting students in securing quality internships and visits from coordinators

3. Students’ industrial work experience scheme
(SIWES) is a Programme that helps the students to
translate their theoretical knowledge to practical work
and then familiarise themselves with the industrial
world.
This Programme is strategically put in place for
students of Nigeria in higher institutions who are
oriented in their various areas of specialization. These
slides covers the nature of work done and summary
of the whole programme (6 Months SIWES) at Ondo
state unicef assisted water and sanitation {WATSAN}
project Oba-ile road near Owena mass transit Akure,
Ondo state.
INTRODUCTION
4. BRIEF HISTORY OF WATSAN
The programme started as a pilot scheme in Imo-State in1982, move to
Gongola in 1983, Kwara in 1984 and Niger State in 1986 under the 1981-
1990 country programme co-operation. In view of the tremendous
achievements made in the improvement of health of children and socio-
economic status of women in the states, the government of the Federal
Republic of Nigeria and united nations children fund {unicef} entered
into present agreement of 1991-1995 programme of co-operation.
The focal states in the {B} health zone for watsan projects are
Ondo, Oyo and Osun states. The Ondo state watsan project formally took
off in July 1992 and enjoyed some degree of autonomy under the then
supervision of his Excellency the deputy Governor of Ondo state late Dr.
Olusegun Agagu who provided exemplary leadership before it was
transferred to the ministry of health under the auspices of the dynamic
honourable state Commissioner for Health, and now is in the ministry of
public utility.

6. NATURE OF WORK AT WATSAN
In Ondo state unicef assisted water and
sanitation project, the nature of their work is as
follows:
• A pre-drilling geophysical investigation for
groundwater development.
• Drilling of boreholes, boreholes design and
completion.
• Installation of pumps and solar panels.
• Maintenance of boreholes.
• Test pumping.
7. A CASE STUDY ON PRE-DRILLING GEOPHYSICAL SURVEY
A pre-drilling geophysical
investigation for groundwater
development at Araromi community,
Akure north local government, Ondo
state.
8. A geophysical survey was conducted at Araromi Community, Akure North
Local Government Area of Ondo State, aimed at recommending a suitable
location for borehole drilling. Electrical resistivity method was utilized. The
Schlumberger electrode configuration was adopted for the field investigation.
Two Vertical Electrical Soundings (VES) point were occupied. The objectives of
the survey are:
CASE STUDY INTRODUCTION
₡ To carry out reconnaissance survey of the geomorphology / hydrology of the
site with a view to locate suitable areas for geophysical investigation.
₡ To carry out geoelectric survey in the chosen areas and consequently
delineate the groundwater aquifers and its thickness.
₡ To locate suitable point for a prolific borehole within the site.

11. GEOLOGY OF THE STUDY AREA
The precambrian Basement complex
rocks (Igneous and Metamorphic) of
southwestern Nigeria (Rahaman 1976)
underlies the study area. The lithological
units identified to be migmatite gneiss are
mostly concealed by the unconsolidated
basement regolith in the area.
The uncosolidated regolith underlain
by fractured/fresh bedrock generally
occurs in a typical basement terrain.
12. FIELD MEASUREMENT
Two vertical electrical soundings (VES) were
conducted at the location. The schlumberger
electrode array was utilized. Total electrode
spread (AB/2) was varied from 1.0m to a
maximum of 50m.The DDR2 Resistivity Meter
was utilized for the data acquisition and Data
collection software (DC) was used to interpret
the data collected on the field.
14. The field data were
presented as depth
sounding curves and
columnar section. These are
shown in the section that
follows with their
corresponding interpretation
attached.

DATA INTERPRETATION
20. The results indicate that the site has medium
groundwater yield. The weathered basement is the
major aquifer which is porous and permeable for
groundwater abstraction. Groundwater
development via borehole is considered feasible at
this location in Araromi community

VES 2 36 meters
Borehole is recommend to the depth of 36 meter, and it
should be drilled with 8 inches roller bit and cased down with 6
inches casing. Hole should be properly gravel packed and
developed after drilling.
RECOMMENDATION
22. GENERAL CONCLUSION
• The industrial training is a very interesting scheme. The
programme enables me to be exposed to industrial activities in
the country such that the practical experience gained would be
of use to me after graduation.
• Apart from the non- availability of employment opportunity in
the country, the scheme still has his own- merit. It makes me to
believe that I am a job creator not a job seeker
• The introduction of this programme has made it possible for me
to visit places and see thing happening outside the university
community. Also, the programme has offered me the necessary
opportunity to relate academic to practical and administrative
experience for future challenges.
23. GENERAL RECOMMENDATION
Having gone through the student industrial working
experience scheme [SIWES] programme, I can duly recommend
the following;
• The department should see it as appoint of duty to assist student
in getting attached to reputable and beneficial company/industry
in good time because many students face difficulties in securing
one.
• The school based co-coordinator should always endeavour to visit
the students at their various place of attachment.
• The students should shun any act of indiscipline such as late
coming and try as much as possible to be of good behaviour
during their stay with any establishment they find themselves
because they are the ambassador of the institution.
