Emily Dickinson Born 1830 - 1886. She lived a mostly introverted and reclusive life.  Her poems contained short lines, typically lack titles, and often utilize slant rhymes as well as unconventional capitalization and punctuation.  Her poems dealt with themes of death and immortality.
 
Walt Whitman Born 1819 - 1892. Whitman worked as a journalist, a teacher, a government clerk, and a volunteer nurse during the American Civil War in addition to publishing his poetry.  Whitman's major work,  Leaves of Grass , was first published in 1855 with his own money.
T.S. Eliot Born in 1876 – 1965. He received the Nobel Peace Prize for Literature in 1948. He wrote poems such as The Love Song of J. Alfred Purfrock, The Waste Land,  The Hollow Man.
Langston Hughes Born 1902 - 1967. First published in  The Crisis  in 1921, the verse that would become Hughes's signature poem,  The Negro Speaks of Rivers,  appeared in his first book of poetry  The Weary Blues  in 1926.
Maya Angelou Born in 1928 She is an American poet, memoirist, actress and an important figure in the American Civil Rights Movement. Angelou is known for her series of six autobiographies. starting with  I Know Why the Cage Bird Sings. Uses imagery and rhyme scheme in poetry.
