That night, Ferdie takes the keys to the family lake house without permission. The next morning, he says goodbye to his dog Laddie before leaving with his family. Emelda breaks up with her longtime boyfriend Elm, feeling he has taken her for granted. He is upset by the breakup and goes out drinking with friends to cope.
