Logic, Facts
and Appeal
CHIEANN A. ESTRADA, SST I
How are you going to sell someone a
product you know nothing about?
What are you going to do to convince
someone of what you are talking about?
Now, try to answer the following
questions:
• In which of the commercials are
you most convinced?
• What makes the commercial
convincing? If not, what‘s wrong
with them?
• In the first commercial, is there
any connection with the tag line
and the situation?
Now, try to answer the following
questions:
• In the second commercial, are
you convinced to buy the
products more than you‘re
moved with the story it
presents?
• In the third commercial, is there
an evidence supporting the
claim that the product is the
best?
A fallacy is the use of invalid or faulty
reasoning in the construction of an
argument. By appearing to be better
than it really is, a fallacious argument
may be misleading. Fallacies may be
committed intentionally or
unintentionally to manipulate or
persuade by deception.
Fallacy – a mistaken
belief, especially one
based on unsound
argument
1. Faulty logic is a kind of
persuasive technique having
fault or imperfect reasoning or
sound judgment. The idea goes
around and around
Example:
Claire is an eloquent
speaker because she
speaks so well
Example:
The cause of poverty is
unemployment.
2. Unsupported fact is not
upheld by evidence or facts;
unsubstantiated
(unconfirmed).
Example:
Lucbanins are friendlier
than Tayabenses.
Example:
Students in the higher
section are more
talented than in the
lower section.
3. An emotional appeal is a
method of persuasion
appealing to both the brain and
the heart.
Example:
A fast food commercial, the store manager
is sharing her journey as an employee of
the company for the past 20 years. Then
at the last part of the video, she says, “I
can’t think of a job more fulfilling than
this.”
Example:
An organization that shows the
aftermath of the typhoon just
before asking the people to
donate money.
It is important to recognize fallacy in an
argument and critically determine the
type used such as faulty logic,
unsupported facts, and emotional appeal,
so that we can identify what to believe or
not and state our reasons why we have
come up with the decision made.

INDIVIDUAL TASK. Let us test your
critical thinking skill in determining the
worth of ideas. Read the following
statements. On the table below, check
the box opposite to each statement to
identify whether it is faulty logic,
unsupported facts, or emotional appeal.
ASSIGNMENT
Identify the type of fallacy used in the
given statements below. Write FL if it is
faulty logic, UF if unsupported facts, and
EA for emotional appeal. Write your
answer in your notebook.
1. Everyone wants to get married
someday. A good self-concept is
important in attracting a husband
or wife. Therefore, everyone should
develop a good self-concept.
2. Students who take physics
instead of earth science are
studious and hardworking. Susie
took physics instead of earth
science. She should receive an
academic distinction.
3. “I loved that movie we saw last night
starring Daniel Padilla. I am going to
rent all of his movies, and I am sure I‘ll
like all of them.”
4. "Science shows that the Earth is
billions of years old!"
5. There must be objective rights
and wrongs in the universe. If
not, how can you possibly say
that torturing babies for fun
could ever be right?
